Bamboo Bicycle Baffles Birmingham

By Gary Cutlack on at

You could soon get yourself the ultimate in eco-friendly bicycles -- one built in Yorkshire from bamboo.

Designed by Oxford Brookes University, the bamboo bike frame has just been officially launched at the Cycle Show in Birmingham, where manufacturer Raw Bikes claims the bamboo structure has the same strength as a standard steel frame, along with the "responsiveness" of expensive carbon fibre that allows it to "dampen frequencies" and provide a nicer ride.

Not that the Bamboo Bikes option is cheaper than carbon fibre, as with a planned launch price of £1750 you'd still be more than a little gutted when it gets nicked from the bike rack outside Sainsbury's. [Bamboo Bikes via The Register]
