Though the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S look the same, it seems like the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S are just different enough — the silent switch and volume up/down buttons are shifted ever so slightly — that your old cases won’t fit.
The iPhone 4S button layout is a lot like the CDMA iPhone 4 (though we can’t confirm if they’re exactly the same) and those cases needed to accomodate for the button shift. There were cases that worked for both models, yes, but if you had a GSM iPhone 4 and a case that didn’t have an open gap for the iPhone’s left side buttons, you’ll proobaaably need to look for a new one. And here you thought Apple didn’t change anything! [Android-Sale via UberGizmo]

Is it just me or does the iPhone 4S sleep switch look wider too? Why the need? Works just fine on my 4!
I don’t believe this is true…when you pre order the iPhone 4S from the online Apple Store they give the option of buying a bumper for £26 which states its compatible with BOTH the iPhone4 and 4S. Its also the bumper with the metal volume buttons and hole for the slider, its not an open area for all the buttons.
Beat me to it!
you do know that apple released a new bumper when they released the Verison iPhone 4 because the sleep switch and volume buttons where changed so it would work on both. Considering the 4S has the same antenna layout as the Verison model I would assume the buttons are in the same space.
But Apple never released a different version of the iPhone 4 in UK, so everyone here has the same original model iPhone 4 with the same old bumper. Therefore I can only assume when Apple’s UK online store states that the bumper is compatible with both the 4 and 4S these must be for the same model as has always been sold here. No?
This looks right according to this image but if you look on the Apple website when you pre-order the iPhone 4S you get:
“Important note: iPhone 4 Bumpers are compatible only with iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. They will not work with any other iPhone model.” under the product information for the bumpers which suggests they are the same bumper and hence the switches aren’t actually different.
Would people recommend getting a case for it? I’ve heard quite a lot of stories about how they actually scratch the phone.
I’ve had my 3GS for about 26 months now and never used a case for it. Sure it has a few little scratches on it, but nothing serious. And it’s survived being dropped on my tiled floor about 5 times now. Which makes me hope the 4/4S is equally as sturdy.
I had a 3G and didn’t have a case. It got scratches but only visible when looking up close at it.
With an iPhone 4 a case is definitely needed as its all glass.
Looking at my friends’ iPhone 4s, it does seem to me like the phone only fractures when the impact is square on the corner. The bumper should be sturdy enough. I’ve seen them shatter with normal third-party cases on, though.
It’s a frakkin’ conspiracy!!!
