Ex-Home Secretary, Blunkett, claims the then French Home Secretary, now President Sarkozy, let slip that the French read confidential emails sent to the UK embassy in Paris in 2002, and suggested that the UK encrypt them. That didn't occur to them before?
Thankfully the government now uses an encrypted peer-to-peer network, called the Government Secure intranet, to do its French-free emailing. What with the current level of cyber attacks the UK is subject to, let's hope the government really has upped its game. [ZDnet]
