Samsung has already demoed its flexible OLED displays as seen up top, but now they’re promising them in phone form, possibly in the “earlier part” of 2012. Does anyone want this?
Samsung phones like the impending Galaxy Nexus already have a curved glass screen — but a truly flexible display might make the process easier. Or perhaps a clamshell phone with a display on top and bottom? Other than that, I’m scratching my head as to why this make sense on a handset.
Why would you want to bend your phone’s screen? What would you gain from it? What does Samsung gain from it, beyond novelty? PC World says the tech will follow on tablets, which is maybe a plus for compactness, but otherwise, this seems more novelty than breakthrough. Screens shouldn’t bend for the sake of being bent. Depends how far they bend. As far as in that picture…wouldn’t work. A slight curve to rest easier in the palm, perfect. Best to see what Samsung produce and show before saying it will or won’t work.
Talking of Samsung…
I’m surprised there’s no article about how Samsung has overtaken Apple in smartphone sales

In short? No. Not-in short? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
I can’t think of any real use for a super-bendy screen like the ones in that video. I’m far more interested in the folding screen. That looks pretty awesome if you ask me.
A flexible screen in a rigid frame is not what I would want, I prefer what Nokia had to show off as seen on Gizmodo this week, a flat screen that can be flexed to zoom in and out off. That was better in my opinion.
bendy screens will be awesome for gaming and for more practical and important things like flight sims for pilot training.. the space that would be taken up by 2 or even 4 monitors will be taken up by one single bendy screen without the annoying window like view you get from multiple monitors be sort of a visual surround i cant wait

Alienware did something similar a while back, hopefully Samsung can now bring it to more people.
i dont know how i have never seen that before but i want one
In a rigid frame it would be pretty useless but that looks more like it was something they did to show how much it bends.
And it has potential in static uses wrap around displays for signs would be one. And a curved monitor would work pretty well for many things and combined with a kinect like technology would allow for the use of some perspective tricks to give a poor mans 3D without all the naffness of actual 3D. For one thing a wide screen curved display would be a massive boost for PC gaming.
I would love the folding tablet that looks amazing. If they could get it flexible enough to roll up you could shrink down a full size tablet massively.
Maybe trendy joggers could snap them onto their wrists
WOW at the transparent display!!! @ 2:32 in the video, I WANT ONE!
The applications for this technology are limited for smartphones really. Who wants to look at a bent screen? The question is can the tech scale to a larger size? Will we get Tv walls, bill boards etc with no obvious bezel or edge?
Wait a mo: a technology site is asking why technological progress is being made and also being delivered to the market?
I would assume a bendy screen is far more resilient to a fall. Cracking the screen by accidentally sitting on it would possibly not be an issue. Clamshell phones and laptops may be able to bend the screen round the edges to allow for smaller form factors with larger screens. Tablets could add flex so that they fit nicely into bags. ‘Dual’ screen laptops/smartphones could use one screen bent around the centre – this could then be straightened into a large screen.
What does Samsung gain? Well, Apple didn’t do it first. That enough is a win for Sammy. Along with overtaking them in Smartphone sales.
Outside of phones this tech could be quite epic.
For a smartphone, I’d love it if it could be worn as a watch, and snapped off when you need to use both hands or need more screen size. That’d be sweet. A slightly bendy phone to stick in your pocket/bag seems pointless.
