Well there’s a revelation for you. That iconic, ingrained in your Windows-using memory, start-up sound, was firstly produced by Brian Eno, and secondly on a Mac. Seems Brian’s not a fan of Windows PCs.
In an interview for the BBC’s The Museum of Curiosity, Brian was asked whether he created the little ditty on a PC:
“No I wrote it on a Mac. I’ve never used a PC in my life; I don’t like them.”
Not only did he write it on a Mac, but Microsoft was pretty demanding about what it should sound like. They sent him a brief with around 150 adjectives to describe what it was to be like, and all in 3.8 seconds. I can just imagine how worked up Balmer would have been over this. Now that I know it was written on a Mac, it’s time to set that chime as my iPhone ringtone — worlds will collide. [BBC via ElectricPig]

Clearly in it for the money, good on him!
To each his own, and he’s a great musician, but… how can he know he doesn’t like PCs if he’s never used one?…
How many Apple haters are out there that have never even touched an iDevice or Mac?
I dislike them despite having had little interaction with them. But that’s because their operation isn’t what I take issue to. Their pricing is what I hate about them. Unless his issue is something along those lines that doesn’t require interaction to determine, it’s an idiotic statement.
And hating Apple for their prices isn’t as idio….oh it’s Apple. I wasn’t thinking straight – everybody knows their computers are over-priced and using yesterday’s tech. My £280 15″ Acer laptop, that weighs 8lbs and has a 3 hour battery life and even a DVD drive, is more powerful than the 11″ £800 odd MacBook Air.
And whilst you’re at it Apple stop using stupid product names- you’re not hippies any more. MacBook Air, iPad2, iPhone 4S……… Where’s the rest of the product name. Nobody will take you seriously in business with just cute names. I know this to be a fact. I’m typing this on my new Acer Aspire GFH4409lk5x68USQ7.
If you charged what Acer charged, you wouldn’t have $80 billion in the bank. And quit with the fancy metal enclosures, when the majority decided plastic was good enough.
Basically stop pissing in the wind
I’ll probably wait to get this in paperback, it’ll make great WC reading.
And that’s wrong too!
I have to use a mac every day at work and I still hate them. They are good for productivity, but for everything else they are piles of steaming shit.
‘I’ve never used a PC in my life; I don’t like them.’
A well known internet meme involving Patrick Stewart and the palms of his hands would appear to be in order.
Why is it a concern to anyone, if he used a Mac, PC or 1″ magnetic tape to record it on, the tool he used is the least important thing in the whole process.
And to state: “Now that I know it was written on a Mac, it’s time to set that chime as my iPhone ringtone”, is just silly, if you like the thing use it if you don’t then don’t use it, don’t limit yourself to want you use based on what brand of tool the artist used – that’s just a plain fucking stupid way to negate the world you live in – I’d buy that album, I really like the sound but the Artist used a PC, bummer – wft.
My humour is obviously lost on you. Sorry about that.
I gotta say this, if you were on US Gizmodo, you would be demoted for that. That is roll round to zero ridiculous.
“Well there’s a revelation for you.” – Not so much, a big deal was made of this back in 95. You were probably too young at the time
OMG!!! So ironic!! Not. Apple was nearly dead by then and eventually needed Microsoft to save them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxOp5mBY9IY ending up with them temporarily owning a significant chunk of the company. So I hardly think this counts as some victory for the fanboys in the grand scale of things.
