Google’s rolled out another Maps update for Android 2.2 and above, bringing essential directions to the navigationally challenged with version 6.0. You’ll get a fancy new Places homescreen that collates local information as well as indoor maps of airports and shopping centres.
Unfortunately indoor maps are restricted to America and Japan, at least for now. But here’s hoping the Google Maps team heads for Westfield, the Bullring and West Quay soon, so we too can optimise our shopping trips with Google Maps precision.
The update is available free from the Android Market, so if you’re running Froyo or higher, you can take it for a spin right now. [Android Market via Google via The Verge]

hmm those maps look a lot nicer on those screesnhots, rendering looks different, have they upgraded the engine for mobiles? I’m on htc desire oxygen 2.3
You will note those screenshots are from ICS, don’t know if the rendering is different on other versions, since I don’t have my desire anymore.
The opaque overlays are an ICS thing I assume? Still looks the same in 2.3.5 with no bottom bar and just the new menu drop down button with search bar and the other icons on the top bar.
Slightly confused do you mean transparent?
My Galaxy S2 (gingerbread) still has opaque white/grey overlays. The new drop down menu is nice but would be better if the layers menu was designed in the same way for consistency
Yes I meant transparent T_T. And I do agree that layers should have a similar drop down instead of that pop up box. Seems like an oversight.
