I used to jailbreak my iPhone because stock iOS couldn’t do the things I wanted it to. But then iOS got better and I stopped. But one thing I desperately miss from my jailbreak days is SBSettings. It’s a way to control your iPhone’s settings from your home screen. And now you can (kind of) do the same thing with IconSettings. Without jailbreaking.
Technically, IconSettings isn’t an app. But I don’t really care because I think it’s absolutely necessary on everyone’s iPhone. If you have an iPhone, start using IconSettings. So what the frack is it? Well, IconSettings is a bookmarklet that can launch specific settings from your iPhone’s home screen. You just save a pre-made bookmark to your home screen and whenever you tap it, you’ll be brought straight into the specific setting you want. If you tap the Wi-Fi icon, it’ll immediately launch the Wi-Fi settings pane on your iPhone. If you hit brightness, the brightness pane pops up. It’s a quick fast method to change settings without having to jump through so many annoying loops that stock iOS makes you jump through.
You save at least two steps with the IconSettings bookmarklet every time you use it. And as I’m always turning on/off Wi-Fi and adjusting brightness, those two steps matter to me! SBSettings is still better than IconSettings but that requires a jailbreak, using IconSettings is seriously as easy as saving a bookmark to your phone. The developer has pretty much every settings tweak you want to make on your iPhone ready for you too: from popular changes like WiFi, brightness, Bluetoth, Autlock and Network to things like VPN, Usage, iCloud, Music and so much more, pretty much every controllable settings on your iPhone can be turned into a launch-able bookmark on your home screen. It’s genius and I love it. Just go here to figure out how to set everything up. [via Engadget]

The iPhone 5 Jailbreak Should Be Out Today
The iPhone 5 Jailbreak Is Finally Here
Interesting app for sure, not sure whether it would be enough to turn me from the dark side of jailbreaking… however… it does not seem to be available on the app store for the UK, which means I can’t be swayed either.
I did a search on my iphone, with no results… can anyone confirm if it can be found via itunes?
Before re-posting from Giz US, can someone make sure these apps are available for UK, otherwise you’ll get a host of whining commentors…
I don’t think it’s an ‘app’ – you go to the website http://iphoneza.co.za/IconSettings/ and then scroll down – find the setting you want on your homescreen – tap it and then use Safari to add a bookmark to your homescreen
All these short cuts are URL’s that iOS recognises and opens up the relevant page.
If you have access to a webserver, you can do it yourself. It’s just you have to create the icon for the homescreen to display
You have to go to the website that’s linked “IconSettings” – ‘http://iphoneza.co.za/IconSettings/’ in Safari on your iphone.
Then you can click on any of the listed shortcuts, cancel the dialog that appears and then add that resulting page (no matter how “empty” it looks) as a shortcut on the homepage.
The downside is that clicking on the shortcust (once on your home page) first launches Safari to run some sort of URL script type thing and then immediately goes to the appropriate section of the phone that the link was for….
Ahhh, the comprehension is in the reading… “Technically, IconSettings isn’t an app…”. No.it’s.not! Clearer directions might have been helpful here, and on the developer’s page
As dorito directions show, you set up the bookmarklet links via the IconSettings webpage, after navigating to it through Safari.
oh, I see you’ve already got this – didn’t see this before my other reply to you
Nice suggestion, will give this a look when I get home, will at least tide me over until the Un-Tethered ios5 jailbreak comes out
Hmm… It’s ok but not as good as SBSettings.
For me, SbSettings and BiteSMS are the 2 big apps that make not jailbreaking very difficult. Got a new iPhone 4 about 2 weeks ago, managed to keep it stock so far. If only Apple would allow these great apps into app store
Giz, you lot are big, maybe start some campaign or something, I don’t want to have to jailbreak (and then worry about updates etc) to get the great apps available in the jailbreak community!
Giz campaigning for Apple to do something? Don’t you know what happened after an Apple engineer walked into a bar?
I forget the rest
Oh hi Siri :d
Pretty cool, but a little annoying: clicking the “app” causes it to open as a page in Safari (as others have said). What’s annoying is that the next time you open Safari, it opens to the same page, and so goes back to your settiings (etc). Have to quickly open the tabs page.
hm….on my android i press settings…change theme…done….so much easier….why its not possible on apple i dont understand…
