Porn Bigwigs Sue For Injunction Over .XXX Domain Monopolistic Price Fixing and Restrictive Policies

By Sam Gibbs on at

Looks like the porn industry isn't all that happy with its new .XXX domains. Two of the largest companies behind such delights as YouPorn and Playboy.com, have clubbed together to sue for an injunction against ICANN over the .XXX domain.

Their claim is that ICM Registry, which manages the .XXX domain, and ICANN, the not-for-profit controller of all things TLD, have been artificially maintaining high .XXX domain prices and 'restrictive policies'. Costing around £130 a pop, the porn barons argue that ICANN and ICM's actions are monopolistic. They go on to say that their block fees were a 'shakedown', even though they were a one-off fee and not a reoccurring one, like most other block-style registrations. ICANN itself is going to receive more money from each yearly registration fee for .XXX domains than any other domain going forward, at $2 a year. Whatever happens in this suit, it's clear that the porn industry isn't too happy with the way dot-XXX is going, and perhaps it's right to be miffed. There aren't many other online industries in the world that are being exploited like this; and while a .XXX domain isn't compulsory as yet, there's no reason to think it couldn't be going forward.
