Schools and Universities Jumping On .XXX Domains

By Sam Gibbs on at

In a somewhat surprising, but totally understandable move, educational institutions are pre-registering any and all .xxx domains that might relate to their brand names. University of Missouri-Columbia has reserved missouri.xxx and missouritigers.xxx for instance.

The first round of .xxx domain sales will be pushed out later this year, but before that trademark owners have been given the chance to reserve names in an attempt to block cyber squatters. Terry Robb, director of IT at the University of Missouri said:

"We don't want someone coming across our trademark on a porn site. God only knows what they'd come up with."

Too right, 'college co-eds' and all that. The porn industry is in two minds about the .xxx domains though, what with easy screening at the ISP level just based on the .xxx TLD. They might also find themselves forced over to it, while trademark owners have yet another domain to deal with when trying to secure their brand. Still, .xxx domains only cost around £130 a pop, so it's probably worth the investment now to avoid potential embarrassments in the future. Perhaps we should be looking at it too; Giz.xxx does have a certain ring to it. [St. Louis Today via Tech-Eye]
