Sony’s gaming division is tracking the growing rumours of a new Microsoft console, with the aim being to release its PlayStation4 as near to it as possible — so there won’t be a huge headstart for Microsoft this time around.
PlayStation Europe president Jim Ryan, speaking to Eurogamer, said it would be “undesirable” for the gaming giant to launch a new console “significantly later” than any updated Xbox, to avoid handing Microsoft another huge lead. Sony’s clearly hinting that it’d push through a “PlayStation4″ announcement as soon as Microsoft fleshes out its plans for a new console.
Microsoft could even announce a new gaming console this January, with the most recent rumours pointing to some form of early hardware or spec announcement at the 2012 CES event. [Eurogamer]

If Microsoft rush theirs out again (broken) I would hate to see Sony forced to do the same.
I’m glad I waited until the PS3 was ready, my console has lasted 5 years without the need for add-ons, replacements and compromises along the way.
Why can’t people see that?
It’s nearing the time for the need for the next gen consoles. It seems like they’ve been pushed as far as they’re gonna go. I have both and prefer my PS3 so I hope they don’t rush the PS4. I wonder how much cloud gaming is going to be implemented.
Do you prefer the PS3 for gaming or as an alround entertainment device.
I went for hte Xbox360 a couple of years ago – after they’d both been out for a while and at that point the Xbox seemed like the better option – cheaper even with the additional Wireless adaptor – seemed to have a better range of games, better quality games, and more ‘other features’ and no point in Blu-ray without a HD tv.
I have recently been looking at blu-ray though and would be tempted by the PS3 for the right price over just a standard blu-ray player but no sure if it is really worth the extra as, except for exclusive titles, I’m not sure I’d game on it.
Plus both companies will keep supporting the current platforms for a couple of years even if the new ones come out next year – they have too much invested in them and too many customers to lose by cutting all ties.
Re: PS3 or Blu Ray. I had the exact same question earlier this year when upgrading my tv. In the end I went with the PS3 as for the extra £100 it seemed to make sense, rather than 6 months down the line regretting only getting the Blu Ray. Probably helped that at the time my 360 had red ringed.
6 months later… I don’t regret buying the PS3, but I am now getting a 360 for xmas off the missus. TBH I just prefer Xbox Live and the shape of the gamepad. Probably the bigger reason being the game pad. The PS3 is great and all, but with regard to gaming I’ll probably be just using it for the PS3 exclusives or games where it’s suggested that the Xbox can’t handle it as well as the PS3 (Battlefield 3). Everything multiplayer will be done on Xbox.
Tell you what though, comparing the noise difference between a PS3 to an Xbox is ridiculous, it’s like Microsoft decided to jam a jet engine in the fan socket whilst the PS3 purrs like a kitten.
I was in exactly the same situation and made the same decision. I loved my 360 (all 4 of them that died and got returned), but had been wanting a blu ray for a few years, but just could;t justify a hundred squid for slightly better quality, so sold the 360 and got a PS3… b plus the noise of the 360 when watching films really spoiled it for me.
I much prefer the ps3 as an all around package, practically silent, great for film, love film etc, and games do look slight better when compared to the 360 versions. However I massively miss the UI and experience of the 360 dashboard, it really brought the system to life and made the social aspect brilliant, especially as all my friends have 360s with is a bit s**t when it comes to multiplayer now. it just looks like they put ) effort into the UI on the PS3.
If the next 360 or whatever it’s called does;t sound like you have a petrol generator a few feet from your head and runs blu-ray then I will probably switch back, and the pads were a million times more ergonomic than the ps3 ones which just aren’t comfortable after a few hours.
TO THE GIZ GILRS & GUYS – can we get an EDIT button for posts please? muppets like me who have typelexia need to be able to fix our screw ups
It’s coming! We’ll be adding a whole host of new features to the site in the coming months…
Hi Kat that was a quick response! Thanks, would be very useful, as my fingers seem to go quicker than my brain when typing and I don’t want to flood the place with unreadable partially back to front comments
You’re all doing an ace job on the site though, just saw the Australian version of GIZ, and this is a million times nicer !
Aw thanks Crezo — and yes, I know what you mean about fingers being faster than the brain. I do really like the redesigned Aussie Giz, and love what they’re doing over there, but (biased as I am) my heart belongs to Giz UK…
@mark.cormack/crezo – Thanks for the advice on the PS3 v Blu-ray.
Defo going to keep the Xbox for gaming though as I already have the games, and xbox live. Never used it for films as my old PS2 got completely knackered when I used is as a dvd player.
Having just got myself a nice HD tv in the black friday goodness, I think I’ll be investing in the PS3 in the new year.
Not too bothered if the new gen come out next year, I’ll still give them a year to bed-down to work out all the bugs.
Had an Xbox, sold it got a PS3, best decision ever. The PS3 exclusives are so much better than anything the Xbox ever had, online gaming is fee too.
Most of my mates have PS3′s now (or both), so we game online on the PS3 too.
Never regretted selling my Xbox, it was very laggy online, very noisy, and it felt very last-gen at times. I also hated the garish dashboard full of adverts.
Awesome – really looking forward to seeing what they do with the PS4.
Does anyone think it will be backwards compatible with PS3 games?
Also – good to see the number of comments on Giz UK picking up.
Well, you know how it goes, Apples — you’ve got to make comments to see comments!
Hopefully it wont be as delayed again, but at least it wasnt as bad as the rrod. I decided to get an xbox since i didnt want to wait, didnt use it much, makes me wonder if it could become faulty since it was like 50% rate. My interesting in gaming in general kind of died down a bit though.
I’m hoping it IS delayed, at least until it’s ready.
I’m fed up with people rewarding Microsoft for launching early. I went through 3 Xboxes (2 of them paid-for) before I bought a PS3, which works.
I really feel that this is just not needed yet. You only have to look at Arkham City, Gears 3, Battlefield etc to see what this generation can still do. What more could a new generation add beyond maybe a smaller, quieter console?
The leap in graphical quality to something new wont mean better games, and it wont be such a drastic leap as it was from XBOX1 to 360, or PS2 to PS3.
Not needed yet for me, and I won’t be buying one on launch day like I did with the 360.
