The Story Behind Everyday Objects

By Bulent Yusuf on at

Good design doesn’t draw attention to itself. On any given day we’re surrounded by evidence of this, and most likely it’s within touching distance. Pick up a routine object which has been designed for a specific purpose, such as a paperclip, a tea bag, a zip -- it does its job so well that we’ve never once considered how the design could be changed or improved upon.

A new exhibition opening at London's Science Museum today examines the inspiration behind these objects, together with the original patents, sketches and prototypes involved in their creation. Here’s a small selection of our favourites.

Hidden Heroes - The Genius of Everyday Things will be running at the Science Museum from 9th November 2011 until 5th June 2012.
