Have you ever wondered what the visuals look like on hallucinogens? This isn’t far off (um, I’ve “read”). This is not an animated gif, and nothing is actually moving. It’s all in your head. Your trippy, trippy head.
Sadly, I do not know who created this incredible optical illusion—I lost the trail somewhere in the bramble of the internet. But whomever he or she is deserves high praise. You can focus on one swirl and it’s stationary, but the other swirls in your periphery start to undulate and twist. Switch to another one, and the same thing is repeated. It’s exquisitely executed. I should warn, however, that if you’re actually on acid, you will either see nothing moving at all, or the effect will be so powerful that your mind will turn to tapioca. Consider yourself warned. Thanks to Gregger for the tip. [Bookofjoe via OhGizmo!]

I could stare at this thing all day long…
Oh god this takes me back. Doing acid and staring at fractals. That’s my late 20′s in a nutshell.
Just set this as wall paper on a dual monitor setup.
I think I fried my brain…
Awesome sauce.
I’m in a trance — can’t tear my eyes away from it.
Hmmm, this wasn’t the best thing to stare at in the office. Must. resist. drawing. cartoons. on meeting notes.
Is staring at this thing like being on drugs? Can’t tell while I am fully medicated.
But if you don’t feel cosy and nice, and life and work still holds no true value, then sadly you are getting the optical phenomena of the drugs without the true benefit – please see your GP for advice.
Does nothing for me unless I keep my eyes moving around the picture. Otherwise it squirms slightly then just remains completely set.
Although I do like the pretty colours.
I am Colour Blind, and this picture unfortunately is rather entirely Static for me.
However, I have heard, that Acid is rather more potent than simple swirls. One could be disappointed if all one achieved was mobile geometry. I know someone who witnessed an indoor arena transform into grassy meadows and blue skies before their eyes. Now that is worth a trip!
So would someone who is colour blind see colours whilst indulging in such activities?
I’m colour blind and I can see the effect fine.
The one reason you wouldn’t do it however is that instead of grassy meadows you could see molten lava with hellbats flying straight at you.
That or you could believe that you were a butterfly and jump out of your 5 story high window in an attempt at a swooping barrel roll.
I love fractals! Thanks.
Awesome! is there someone that can explain this phenomena? what happens in the brain when you pour some fractals at it??!?
Imagine having a couple of images like this in High-res..
So… for all of you who haven’t consumed LSD and are speculating on what happens when you have a dose: the stories of flying elephants and “arenas turning into grassy meadows” or “molten lava with hellbats flying towards you” are really falling for the perpetual myth of LSD.
You know what happens to you? You. You see what you want to see, and if you’re determined to have a bad time, you’ll have a bad time. If you’re feeling bad, you’ll have a bad time. If you think bad thoughts, those bad thoughts might be amplified 1000 fold. You know what drinking when you’re depressed is like? Get sadder? Same principles apply.
If you take acid with your bestest friend, or just someone you love and you’re feeling happy and fine, then basically those feelings of happiness will be amplified 1000 fold. See what I’m getting at here? Yeah, sure you might see reality visually distorted, sometimes to a hilariously comic effect, but this talk of spaces being completely physically transformed is a fallacy, at least for me and everyone I know. That’s the collective experience of between 9 individuals.
I actually find it quite amusing to read people speculating on an experience which is actually extremely personal. Maybe there are people that told you that they saw solid ground transform visually into molten lava… but they’re lying.
Looking at this graphic on LSD will definitely be pretty wild, it’ll just be an amplified effect and you could be properly engrossed for a long while getting lost in it.
