BBC Testing Surround Sound Radio for Headphone Listeners

By Gary Cutlack on at

Radio 3 listeners are in for an unusually exciting experience this Christmas, thanks to the BBC testing out a "binaural" system that it hopes will create a believable surround sound effect for listeners using headphones.

The test will see the BBC's web stream of Radio 3's Nine Lessons and Carols made available in the new audio format throughout Christmas. You won't need any special hardware to hear the effect through headphones connected to a PC audio out, but you will require to install a specific audio codec from Fraunhofer IIS if you'd like to get the trial working through separate speakers.

There are six slightly different audio options to fiddle with, so users can find one that best suits their "different types of headphones and head shape." [BBC via Techradar]
