Samsung W999 Dual-Screen, Dual-Core Android Phone Proves Clamshells Aren't Dead

By Sam Gibbs on at

You might be forgiven for thinking that the coolest form factor of them all, the clamshell, died with the original RAZR series. Currently you seem to be only able to get clamshells as crappy super-dumbphones, at least in the UK, but Samsung's W999 certainly turns the tables on that.

This dual-screen, dual-core, Samsung Galaxy S II-squeezed into a clamshell form factor, has me drooling. Two 3.5-inch OLED screens, both with 800x480 resolution, means real-estate isn't an issue; while the device is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz chip to make sure performance is top-notch. Its running Android Gingerbread and has a traditional keypad and navigational keys reminiscent of yesteryear to complement its touchscreen.

There's a small catch though, and that's the price -- at around £1000 (10,000 yuan) it's not exactly cheap. But then it's currently only launching in China, so if you're desperate enough to jump over there to grab one, price probably isn't going to be that much of an issue.
