Sony Ericsson Makes Barely Functional Ice Cream Sandwich Alpha Build Available For the Brave or Foolhardy

By Sam Gibbs on at

Craving a taste of Google's latest Android iteration and running a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S, Neo V or Ray? This is your lucky day -- SE has made an alpha build of the Ice Cream Sandwich update it's working on available for your early upgrading pleasure.

It's genuinely alpha though; quite a lot of bits don't actually work, including some essentials like the cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios (you didn't want to make any calls or do any browsing, right?). The FM radio and ANT+ are also borked, and it'll come without the Google stock apps like Gmail and Maps. Frankly, I'm not sure why you would actually install this, other than gaining a swish new UI and playing with the new music controls on the lock-screen for a bit.

You'll need an unlocked Xperia Arc S, Neo V or Ray, with an unlocked boot loader to actually install the update. It'll also prevent you from updating OTA when the final version is available -- you'll have to update manually. But it's Ice Cream Sandwich and you can have it now! There's the deep seeded desire to update we all know and love, and then there's plain insanity. [Sony Ericsson via TechRadar]
