Everyone’s favourite historical nerd is going to be immortalised on a stamp, with the Royal Mail’s ‘Britons of Distinction’ series set to feature Mr Computers himself, Alan Turing.
The stamp doesn’t show Turing in the flesh, though, opting instead for a much less controversial photograph of one of the code breaking machines he helped create, with his name and the description “Mathematician and WWII code breaker” beneath.
The Royal Mail’s also releasing a set of stamps to commemorate the works of Roald Dahl this month, with a collection celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens due later this year. Plus there will be some for the London Olympics, of course, which will see the RM print a special stamp each time a British athlete wins a gold medal. [BBC]

So “Alan Turing NOT to feature …” or “Turing codebreaking machine to feature…” would be more accurate headlines. I assume that he isn’t being show himself as he is a convicted and unpardoned criminal. ” Plus there will be some for the London Olympics, of course, which will see the RM print a special stamp each time a British athlete wins a gold medal” – that will be a small set then.
“Postal company printing the letters A.L.A.N.T.U.R.I.N.G. on pre-payment letter delivery token”
Sorry Gary, I wasn’t criticising your choice of headline, more the Royal Mails choice not to feature Turing himself.
“The stamp doesn’t show Turing in the flesh, though, opting instead for a much less controversial photograph of one of the code breaking machines”
Photographs of Turing cause controversy?
WTF – if this is about “Britons of Distinction”, then the very least the Royal Mail could do is to actually show the Britons in the flesh; why do it for half of them and not the others…crazy Royal Mail.
I agree with all the comments above… what’s wrong with showing Alan’s image? At least then people will know what he looked like.
