Barking and Dagenham Council has rather belatedly embraced the humble text message, launching a new SMS information service for its housing tenants.
The system has been designed to take some of the stress off the council's more widely used public-facing contact options, also reducing costs generated by the sending of threatening letters when tenants fall behind with their rents. It's simple to use -- residents pop the council a text message, then an automated reply pings back their rental balance, while an additional reminder system replaces the usual postal options.
It's free to use, if you live in any of Dagenham and Barking's social housing and haven't had your phone stolen off you by the neighbours. [The Register]
