It took a while, but owners of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 finally have an untethered jailbreak. Yup, it’s time to start putting ROM apps on our iOS A5 devices.
The updated Greenpois0n tool is called Absinthe A5 and be downloaded here. Yeah, the servers are getting hammered pretty hard, so you might want to wait until later in the day to get your jailbreak on. The tool works on the iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 and the iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1.
According to the Greenpois0n folks, the hack was a bit more difficult than previous jailbreaks and took “thousands of hours of brain-power & effort from a legion of world-renowned hackers.” The tool is OS X only for now. But a Windows and Linux version are on their way. As always, anytime you jailbreak your device there’s a chance you could brick it. Do not come crying to me if that happens. I warned you. Did this earlier, works great on iPad 2 on 5.0.1
After jailbreaking, the absinthe icon should bring you to the website and install cydia in the background before rebooting. If the site keeps erroring, just keep trying!
Yup, went without a hitch on my 4s (9A405) too. I would do the GF’s iphone and ipad 2 but she’s only interested in looking cool with them so I won’t bother.
As much I miss sbsettings, background remover and utorrent remote, I’m going to wait a week or so until further bugs have been ironed out. Not saying there are serious bugs in the new jailbreak, just giving it a chance for thousands of other people to experiance any issues first. Nothing like a real world test of an application to really clean it up.
Also gives the developers a chance to test their JB apps out on iphone 4S and fix up any compatibility issues.
Will be good to have my misplaced sense of control back again.
Now just have to wait for o2 to open up the carrier unlock process for the 4s, and all will be good with the world again.
The only issue that I have found so far, is that a number of default apps tend to lose their icons, or more specifically they get replaced with a blank silver icon. Only ever one at a time and only ever in built Apple apps (maps, itunes, app store etc.)
Other than that (which a respring seems to be solving) it all seems tickety boo.
And yes, welcome back SBSettings, I’ve missed you!
The windows version is out
Here’s a tutorial on it-
