A report in UK games trade title MCV claims Sony will reveal its expected “follow-up to the PS3″ at this year’s E3 gaming event. Given that we’re also expecting Microsoft and Nintendo to show off their next-gen consoles, it could be the biggest and most brutal three-way console battle of all. E3 2012 starts on June 5th. [MCV]

The Ultimate Combo Console -- PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U in One Box
The Wii U Will Cost £100 More Than an Xbox 360
Will the Xbox 720 Have a Wii-U-Style Touchscreen In Its Controller?
This rumour is stampeding all over the internet right now. It had best be true, as I might even take a couple of days off work to catch the announcements!
This, I like.
Thanks Microsoft, your continued shortcutting of console generations means you have also forced Sony’s hand into releasing the PS4 prematurely.
Microsoft yet again screw over gamers with their disruptive marketing.
Well, Nintendo are jumping the gun with a new console ‘generation’ too… Although I guess since the Wii was so underpowered in the first place compared to current generations, it was only a matter of time.
That’s a lot of fluff,
Microsoft and Nintendo both had a 5 year life cycle in mind for their consoles from the off, the fact that they’ve both gone beyond this is a testament to their individual successes. Sony anticipated a 10+ year lifecycle for the PS3, but it’s not turning out the way they wanted.
It’s their own fault if they can’t stay ahead of the game because of their own faults/miscalculations…
I remember when they were by far the most advanced and almost untouchable console manufacturer, Microsoft announced they were coming into the game scene and most people laughed. Now they are they are the ones playing catch up.
I wonder where all started to go wrong for them.
Anyway on this type of war we will be the winners.
what on earth are you talking about? Both Ms & Sony’s current consoles have been out for longer than pretty much any other generation prior. When Sony or MS talk about a 10+ year lifecycle they don’t mean 10 years between generations, they mean the console will be catered for for 10 or more years. See the PS2 for example. That is still selling and being developed for way past it’s 10 year cycle and 6 years after the PS3 was released.
Nobody is jumping the gun, infact they are actually over a year late.
PS1: 1994/1995
PS2: 2000
PS3: 2006
Difference between generations: 5-6 years
Xbox1: 2001
Xbox 360: 2005
Xbox “Next”: 2013
Sure, the difference between the Xbox1 and the 360 is only 4 years, but the 360 onwards is a staggaring 8 years. How exactly is Microsoft jumping the gun?
Fun fact: “Average” time between Xboxes will work out at 6 years. The same as between PlayStations. Troll harder!
Except of course, Microsoft ditch support for the previous console on the day the new one is released.
Not a single game was released for the Xbox, the day the 30 was launched. Sony continued supporting the PS2 for well over the 10 year mark, releasing games.
And what’s that got to do with forcing Sony’s hand, as you so claimed earlier?
Besides, you’re basing that off of ONE console generation. Microsoft has only had 2 consoles and yes, the Xbox1 was quickly killed off, but you have absolutely no proof that Microsoft is intending on doing the same thing with the 360. In fact, considering that Microsoft has only just added a bunch of new features and multimedia capabilities, it implies that the 360 is in it for the long haul.
Should be very interesting!! I’m guessing eve if they do announce something, we won;t see a release till at least Dec of this year if not next year at some point. Lets hope MS has managed to get blu-ray into theirs so I can switch back from my PS3… if they haven’t looks like I’ll be going PS4 instead.
The PS4 and Xbox 720 (or whatever it’s called) will almost certainly NOT be on show this year. At the very most, we’ll see tech demos and a prototype machine announced in their conferences – but the machines will not be announced as finished products and they will not be available to play. I’d actually be entirely surprised if we even got a confirmation of any real games to be released on them – even the Wii U last year was working on tech demos and maybes, and it was actually on the show floor.
It doesn’t really make a lot of sense for either company to be pushing for a new console release this year. Microsoft have Kinect to push for at least one more year and Sony is already asking people to pony up for a Vita this year. Neither wants to canabalise their existing hardware before its time, and rushing to market this year just because Nintendo are wouldn’t really benefit them.
Announcing that they have products forthcoming in about 2013-2014, though, would prevent Nintendo with walking away with all the headlines from E3 this year and will put them in good stead for a proper announcement at the next E3.
I really wouldn’t put too much investment into the idea that we’ll be seeing the actual consoles themselves any time this year, though.
I agree, I really doubt they will announce anything. It’s probably going to be next year, for a 2014 release (they typically announce new consoles 1 year before release, at least Sony does)
I hope this is the best Console war since the SNES vs Megadrive..,
That went well then…
