According to quotes apparently coming from Simon Cowell today, a deal with Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic space tourism venture could see the winner of 2012′s Britain’s Got Talent sent into space on one of the first private space trips.
The news comes via an interview with the Daily Star, in which Cowell is reported to have said: “I love the idea that if they are up for it they have the option of performing in space … It’s tens of millions of pounds but Richard genuinely is up for doing it. I am being serious, I swear to God and on my mum’s life.”
Simon doesn’t seem to overly familiar with the rules of space and how zero gravity actually works, though, adding: “If you’re a juggler we’ll need to make heavier balls.”
Virgin Galactic hasn’t yet announced a schedule for launch of its service. If any of the above is actually true, it sounds like the £130,000 tickets to space may start being used at the end of 2012. [Metro]

Personally I think Mr Cowell should keep the ticket for himself. Or at least the part for the outward bound leg only.
Being sent into space, Simon Cowell… The gags practically write themselves.
Indeed they do, see above
Now instead of making X band christmas number 1, we should focus on making the most unsuitable act get sent into space. Sure would beat opera voice singer #766 and street dancing group #435.
Ooooooo does this mean we can send One Erection, oops I mean One Direction into space and preferably leave them there !!
Anyone up for making a Gizmodo UK band then?
Here’s hoping they’re sent out without the spaceship.
