I’m sure there are 3.5 people out there who will put Sony’s portable Blu-ray player to great use. It has a 9-inch screen, 4.5 hours of battery life, and 1080p output via HDMI. But for the rest of us, The Sony SX910 is an extremely niche-y, borderline unnecessary piece of tech.
99.9999999999999% of us would be better served with a tablet and a Netflix account, because Blu-ray’s 1080p resolution is basically wasted on a screen so small. But I sort of get it. Hypothetically there is a Blu-ray enthusiast out there who also spends a lot of time on the road, and really doesn’t want to waste their time obtaining digital or DVD copies of movies they already own.
The Portable Blu-ray player will be available this Spring. [Sony]

I’ve noticed quite a few hotels getting nicer/bigger televisions of late, so there’s probably a market for middle class families with 8 year old children to have a film to watch in the car, then another in the hotel with a HDMI lead they brought along. And if the home film collection is full of Blu-rays then it’s a logical buy.

I don’t know what the rez is of this device’s screen is, article doesn’t state, but it isn’t about the size of the screen but the pixel count. If you watch a 50″ 1080p TV from across the room then that is OK, watching a 10″ 1080p tablet wouldn’t be very watchable from across a room. A 50″ 1080p TV would be unwatchable at 20 inches away from your face, and not only would you not see all the image without scanning you would see pixels, but watching a 10″ 1080p tablet 20 inches away would be like having a home cinema, and with these modern tablet screens a very expensive home cinema at that with great colour and contrast – a few grands worth of kit.
I personally look forward to having a 10″ 1080p one day with 5.1 sound output, plug in some 5.1 headphones lie back in bed and have an luxury immersive cinema experience for 500 notes or less.
And I don’t know if this is a UK article or a US rehash but the current UK netflix content sucks major balls.
But this portable Sony blu-ray has some uses, like how many people have 1080p TV’s and no content to watch on it, a friend can call around with a movie and a this device for a night in, or as mentioned a big screen in a hotel to keep the kids busy, business presentations – but all this can be done with a decent laptop with HDMI out, or a PS3 – so it is a bit pointless, but 7″ or 10″ screens doing 1080p on a tablet, or even a 5.3″ phone, is really fucking cool IMO – far away small, close up big.
