The geekiest of the operating systems is branching out into entertainment. Ubuntu TV is the open-source answer to your living room set-up, and you could have a TV running the software by the end of the year.
Ubuntu TV is a TV-optimised version of the desktop OS, based around the Unity UI. It feature full-on media center and DVR features, including movie, TV and music stores, and a YouTube app. The idea is to make the OS free for manufacturers to package with their TVs, and Ubuntu says there will be TVs on shelves by the end of the year.
There’s a working Ubuntu TV at CES, so more details and comment to follow. [PC Pro]

I really hate unity, however I think this is the ideal application for it. It’ll be interesting to see which TVs will come equipped with it. Just keep unity away from my desktop though.
Amen to that.
Geekiest of the operating systems? Are you referring to Ubuntu or GNU/Linux?
In both cases you’re wrong and I suspect Canonical would be greatly offended given the amount of work they’ve put in to make Linux user friendly.
Ubuntu certainly couldn’t be considered geeky once it’s found it’s way into a TV for use by the masses.
‘Yeah, I used to like Ubuntu, before it was popular. I like a new OS now. You’ve probably never heard of it.’
Unity still looks so, so bad.
This is reaffirming my desire to shift all our dev platforms from a custom Ubuntu build to *anything* else. They keep wasting time going down routes that are just fruitless, there’s enough for them to get sorted before they think about it.
It seems like it’ll be a bit like the PS3 OS but more functional (and a proper browser).
The PS3 serves as a nice media center now it has all the catch-up things & lovefilm/netflix, but it’s definately missing a few features.
