Virgin Media has issued an apology about last night. The company’s broadband service suffered a three-hour period of downtime yesterday evening, which effected users across the country.
The crunch came during the peak 5.00pm to 8.00pm home internet-staring-at period. No particular reason for the downtime has been given, with Virgin saying whatever it was is now fixed — and also giving out the classic ”turn it off and on again” advice to people who are still experiencing any lingering connection issues today.
Just remember you’re about to get a massive free speed bump before moaning about it too much on Twitter. [Virgin Media via The Register]

Worked fine for me all last night. Sadly. Would have got me out of a 2 hour international teleconference.
Noone can complain about their net being down for three hours, it happens. We forget our place in the Universe sometimes an people think of themselves as gods and that everything revolves around them.
Fortunately I was napping between 6 and 7 so I didn’t really see it.
I did have on and off service for a few hours afterwards though. :T
Sorry to be a pedant, but it’s ‘affected’
*Hangs head in shame*
I noticed this before I noticed that my internet wasn’t broken at this time and I’m a VM customer. Worrying.
according to their status website it was adsl broadband only.
i have the 20gb line which is the maximum adsl can support i believe? i dont think ill be getting the upgrade so can i complain?
i will add when i lived with my parents and was able to get a optical brandband line, i got upgraded from 2gb to 5, to 10, 20gb for free everytime. i moved out 4 years ago so i guess i would of been getting the 100gb line next. bummer really
To be fair, I am grateful for the speed increase but even so, I want my internet to be consistant and reliable, Not speedy and fragile… Sorry
How many times has it been down in the last, oh let’s say…. year?
We had a very odd experience, on all thre of my device on my wifi network (iPad, laptop, desktop), everything but Facebook and twitter brought back 404 errors (with three different browsers). And two devices using a 3G connection from 3 suffered the same symptoms, only lasted 30 mins or so and then went back to normal, also, during that period, the speedtest.net iPad app was showing speeds nearly four times faster then we usually get at that time of night, very odd….
Yes it was down and they also turned their phones off too. Does customer services mean ignore customers if it’s a big problem and what’s wrong with offering a recording telling customers the problem rather then let them think it’s a local problem or just another FxxK up from Virgin.
I bet they were hacked – why else would they not say if it was technical or hardware. Sony did the same for the PSN hack. “Whatever it was it’s fixed” Very informative information
but very obvious too. Genius
Does anyone else have continual problems from Virgin. I’ve clocked 20hrs in 3 months suspended twice and given continually different prices by different advisers. I’ve all audio recordings and would advise all Virgin customers to do the same. They offer incorrect information and then try cover it up.
I’ve been with virgin for years now and have never had a problem with them. I left BT because they were just plain bad with the worst customer service. One time BT cut off our net by mistake and it took them a month to connect it back again because that was apparently the only time they could come out to reconnect us. Yet with Virgin if you have an issue they come and sort it next day always from my experience.
I have noticed their service being down a few times towards the end of last year but I’ll forgive them for their excellent service.
Really they’re the best choice if you’re in the UK and it is unlimited too.
Online gaming was down. both psn and xboxLive. hotmail.com. xbox.com, eu.playstation.com, uk.playstation.com to name a few were down for virgin customers. Tivo services were intermittent
After speaking to virgin 4 times, then my mate who works for them i found out what the problem was (apparently).
One of the main Boxes fried it’s self. the fans failed. it took 3mins for the box to get to 73′c. it took till half nine to pull out both racks and replace the one. The box was in simplex from that point allowing traffic redirection to reading and oxford. it took another 2 hours for them to get the second rack in and working.
sounds like a big scam in overtime wages to me, even if the box blew at 5:45pm it shouldn’t have take 5 hours +
hope that helps everyone
