There aren’t many more humiliating things to happen to you if you’re a man than being turned down by the woman you love when you propose to them. But if you happen to be on camera at the time; up on the big screen of a basketball game; on “Mistletoe Cam” no less – that’s just got to be truly gut wrenching. I’m cringing just thinking about it. Ouch. [YouTube via The Mirror]

Qualcomm's Attempt at a Viral Ad Backfires Badly
Attempts To Dodge Chinese Hacking May Backfire As Usual
Is it OK to Propose on Twitter?
More American tripe stories. Please stop the filler.
Oh come on, this came from the US yes, but the humiliation the guy suffers is universal, WTF is wrong with this being posted here?
Sam picked it up from the Mirror… Not sure why he’s reading the mirror though… slow day in the office maybe, but at least it’s not a cross post from Giz US.
Personally, I can’t bring myself to watch it.
Oh the pain, the pain!
I’m a regular reader of the Mirror (where’s that SarcMark when you need it?).
When you get sent it from somewhere it’s only proper you credit them — no matter how, errr, crummy you think their news institution is. I’m sure there are lots of quality articles in the Mirror. Probably.
Fair enough, credit where credit is due. Tis only fair.
Actually, this was an original story from the UK (Sam is sat beside me in our London office), but as you may’ve noticed, we tend to post funnier / lighter posts on Fridays. (With WTFRIDAY being one of our most popular categories.)
If you read our “about us” section of the site, you’ll also see we’re not straight tech. Which is pretty refreshing, actually.
Yea you tell him Kat
I enjoyed watching that (well grimaced, ouch that was painful)
I might have seen it in the Metro too, possibly even in the same issue as a particular Gizmodo editor’s name-check in a certain iPad 3 article…Is having stuff in print the equivalent of shooting on film for you guys?
I don’t understand what on earth this is doing on a gadget blog.
1. Those Jumbotrons are pretty obviously a gadget.
2. Giz is not JUST about gadgets
3. Saying this on US Giz would most likely get you suspended or banned. Thank the FSM we have a more enlightened regime here.
Sometimes you’re just that little bit ahead of me…
Please don’t bring the noodly one into this.
I don’t really care about what would happen on the US Gizmodo.
Obviously this site is not for me, is there a way for me to de-register my account, as it were?
Don’t go. Please stay and play.
We’re all very passionate about this site, and if we pick up on any negativity towards it, we then feel the need to protect and explain.
Your statement probably came a little too close after MikJe’s, and the fire was up…
Please read my response to MikJe, as I don’t have the patience to reply to both of you properly.
It’s a good fit. Jumbovision is a giant gadget, used for good, evil and failed proposals. And this was filmed on someones cameraphone (another gadget). I see this along the same lines as some bloke using internet memes to propose… didn’t see anyone complain about that one when it was posted… although it did have a happier ending.
Yep, very loosely gadget based, but that’s how I justify it to myself. Sometimes you just need a rest from the Android v Apple battle, and remember there is a world out there, with people living, laughing and dying a little inside when they’re poorly thought out plan to propose backfires in front of the whole world.
Seeing vids of little kids kicking their Dad in the bits also gets me.
It’s an “internet sensation” apparently. That’s gotta be a little tech related no? Hell, even if it isn’t I couldn’t resist. Poor, poor guy.
I’ve just emailed you to clear this up; hope that’s ok.
Please do not stop posting things from abroad. I believe that most of us find it interesting and it is good to have a glimpse of the outside and get the best from everywhere. Different articles that are not just gadget related are also great entertainment and a good treat (I am looking at you Mr. Delito). You all have been doing a great job.
Meh, I come to Giz for entertainment. So I don’t really care if it’s ALL gadgets tbh, a bit of variation is nice. I was cringing before I had even clicked play, feel so bad for the guy.
Totally agree.
But why would you put yourself through that? Reminds me a bit of Zookeeper, but with real people, and without the Mariachi band.
Maybe I’ve got my sensible head on but surely if you’re really ready to get married then you should know that the other person will say yes. If you’re not sure then you’re more than likely popping the question too soon.
Plus the added pressure or a Jumbovision isn’t going to help.
He probably thought she was going to say yes. Either that or he’s a bit of a fool. Then again, on “Mistletoe Cam” you have to wonder.
Have to wonder why a guy would think that putting his girlfriend on the spot in front of thousands of people would be a good thing…
It’s okay everyone. I approve.
She was probably waiting for something abit more special, not I public, on a great big screen, he obviously didn’t know her as well as he thought…
If you crave attention that badly, you really deserve some humiliation.
I think these are set-up these days. The arena might not be involved, but the couple deffo are!
The reaction of the way she leaves – and the way he slumps his head and just walks out…non of it seems real
The camera guy is probably in on it too – I mean, why would you start filming the jumbo tron?
Poor guy !!
For the record, I think the Giz UK team do a fantastic job so a little lite story hear and there can’break up the tech tech and tech stories we all love.. reminds us all that there is a world outside and we probably should get out in once in a while
