Symantec has been scrabbling around trying address a security breach from 2006 that came to light recently. But the fact that the company wasn’t sure its was hacked in the first place doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Symantec originally said that the worst case scenario was that hackers had stolen some five-year-old versions of some business-centric software. Since, they’ve suggested that corporate users should stop using their software. Turns out, they’re not entirely sure what did happen. A Symantec spokesperson told Wired:
“We knew there was an incident in 2006, but it was inconclusive at the time as to whether or not actual code was taken.”
I am certainly not about to hold Symantec up as some kind of bastion of online security. But, when a company that trades on digital security can’t tell exactly how it’s been hacked, what the hell does that say about the industry as a whole? [Wired; Image: mmckeay]

I’m not going to defend security companies as a whole but… since when does one mistake by one company ‘say (anything) about the industry as a whole?”
Its 5 o’clock and I’m still in my PJ’s does that mean the whole of society is going down the pan?
I don’t use antivirus scanners, I’ve had windows 7 on my laptop for 3 years, Never have i once had a virus according to hitmanpro (checked the other day just in case)
The only people who get virus’s are people who don’t know how to use the internet. Fact! I use the internet for everything! and i mean everything, I’m at my computer atleast 6 hours a day 7 days a week browsing everything! and never have i once had a virus! If you don’t want a virus, Learn how to use the internet correctly, Read before you enter check before you download… Guarantee anything you guys use the internet for, I do the same… But smarter faster and better, Virus free
“The only people who get virus’s are people who don’t know how to use the internet. Fact!”
Just how old are you?
There are more ways to get a virus than the internet. /Shock /horror
Also, it’s not just about viri; it’s about malware, spyware, rootkits, zero-day exploitations, trojans; being “clever” doesn’t protect you. It makes something less likely, but not impossible.
Your arrogance will be your downfall.
Running AV software doesn’t harm your computer; getting a virus does.
i use my pc much the same as you, every day, except
install microsoft security essential (hatters gunna hate) costs me nothing, runs well, and it means i can be an idiot on the internet sometimes. used to use NIS but it was literally crap compared to MSE
running 3 computers, not had a single issue with any of them
