Wii U Supports NFC, Nintendo Network Coming Too

The uptake of NFC tech is about to get a big boost, with Nintendo saying it's sticking NFC chips into the Wii U controller. And for your longer-range communication needs, Nintendo's latest attempt at doing the internet will also be incorporated into the new machine.

Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata said NFC will be used for the likes of card-reading augmented features, communicating with additional peripherals and making micropayments.

Iwata also announced a complete rethink of Nintendo's internet activity, with the Nintendo Network set to arrive at some point this year. The big promise this time is integrated voice chat, support for multiple user accounts, additional downloadable content and possibly even sales of big-name new games direct to users.

The plan is to launch the Nintendo Network for the company's 3DS console first, then add in support for the Wii U when it arrives at the end of the year. [Techradar]
