AMD has been going head-to-head with Intel in the PC market for years, so it’s no surprise that they will be hot on Intel’s heels in the mobile space, too. Yep, they have plans to design tablet CPUs. It’s like two gorillas shrinking themselves to do battle in your pocket.

AMD’s new CEO Rory Read spilled the beans on AMD’s roadmap through 2013 at an analyst meeting today. The biggest revelation was that we can expect to see AMD’s first mobile chip—codenamed Hondo (like John Wayne)—on Windows 8 tablets later this year. As for their other announcements, here’s the distilled version: AMD is going to be making one, two, and four core chips for mobile devices, and they’re going to keep making bigger/faster/better chips for laptops and desktop while working on lowering power-consumption across the board. And with today’s alleged leak that Windows Phone 8 will be based on the Windows 8 kernel, we might even see these chunks of silicon in a handset.
