One of Anonymous’ Twitter mouthpieces claims the hacker collective just took down CIA.gov. It’s definitely down. If this is what it looks like, it could be Anon’s greatest hit so far.
The attack—so far cosigned by two of the largest Anon Twitter accounts with a combined 600,000 followers—would fall in line with the group’s increasingly ambitious hit list of large corporate interests and powerful law enforcers. And it is, after all, #FuckFBIFriday, the end of the week occasion Anon often uses for hitting governmental agencies. Still, it would take a level of coordination and effort to knock off a federal site that should have revealed itself by now.
Update: Despite apparent confirmation via Twitter, nobody in Anon’s IRC channels seem to have any idea what’s going on.
Update 2: CIA.gov is still down, and no satisfactory explanation. One Anon told me the site is being DDoSed by a group of anti-pedophile hackers who are using seized kiddy porn servers as a botnet against the CIA. That’d be something!
Update 3: CIA.gov has now been down for well over an hour.
Update 4: It’s starting to look doubtful that this is the work of Anonymous’ nebulous fist. When LulzSec took down CIA.gov over the summer, they were quick to gloat. Now the semi-officials are mostly silent. Or talking about trivial Mexican mine hacks.
Update 5: The Twitter account where the Anon claim first originated now seems as confused as anyone else, as it tweets to a fellow associated account:
@youranonnews go figure, RT got it up from me, u retweeted and other news sites post your tweet pl0x (this msg will self destruct in T-2 lol)

If they have the capability to bring down the CIA site the nothing pretty much will be impossible, and if they can retrieve data from the CIA then is anything ever really like totally secure? Forget what wiki leaks did, the Anonymous thing could be a greater problem for the authorities..
I am not impressed by them brining down a website, its old school tech, and honestly, it would be more impressive if they crashed google or Amazon who can deal with high traffic than a semi-site like the CIA’s
yes, there are totally secure things—offline storage, i know for a fact Lockheed martin keep a large amount of their information offline at all times, i expect the CIA keeps the good stuff just as save.
if annon, or lulzsec get that stuff….then i will be impressed
on the flip side, they can cause plenty havoc by taking sites down, and its a decent enough way of voicing a usually common opinion, so long as they remains within their ability, they should keep doing what they are doing.
*sighs*

Brilliant!!
Lol
Well it’s abit more than a poster if the website is down. Maybe you have eyes that can see a website that just does not load. No doubt they will try to play it down though..
well they managed to delete NBC’s page wasn’t it? in the initial megaupload outlash, perhaps they have done the same for the CIA’s poster.
i am reasonably sure it isnt anymore than that, i cant see anything in the way of them getting any specific infomation.
ive got my hat all ready just in case tho
All they’ve done is taken down their public information website. It will have no effect on the CIA’s daily business. Nil, nada, squat. It is, as the cartoon says, like tearing down a poster. And just like a poster, it will be put back up with the minimum of fuss just like every other time they’ve temporarily taken down a website.
