In the run-up to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week, ZTE has just announced that it will be launching eight new phones at the event. I hate to be the one to break it to you, ZTE, but less can be more.
Engadget reports that ZTE will be launching eight new handsets at the show. I’m sure we’ll marvel at their multi-core processors, LTE capabilities, Android and WP7 operating systems, varying quantities of storage, indistinguishably mediocre cameras, and oh my God nobody is paying attention to this sentence anymore.
I’m fine with new devices. I love new devices. But I find it difficult to understand how a company can believe that launching eight phones will see them competing with the big boys.
Reluctant as I am to use it as an example, Apple releases one phone at a time, but it sells outrageously well. HTC realised its portfolio was bloated, so it’s vowed to stop making so many damn phones.
There is value in releasing fewer, better handsets, as opposed to splurging dozens into the market in the hope that one might end up successful. ZTE, take note. [Engadget]

Without knowing the specs breakdown on the phones Its hard to know how they are differentiated from each other (except by OS). there could be a Low, mid and high range phone with the high range one also having a LTE version. Just Because Apple does a thing one way, doesn’t mean everyone should follow them like sheep. Samsung seem to be doing quite well out of releasing different phones for different price ranges.
Do be honest, I gotta disagree with you this time Daz.
I hate Apple, I really do. But having a single product line really makes sense.
Ok, well not just a single product line. I think 2 product lines would be better. A mid range, which could be smaller phones with less power, and high. I don’t see the point in these guys making low end phones. Let someone else churn out burners.
With so many phones on the market, it’s all too much of a clusterfuck for consumers. All the R&D and costs that must go with having so many different models must also be huge.
The only way I can accept the 8 phones on one day:
2 Android (med,high)
2 Windows Phone (med,high)
Then the same 4 as above but for the US market with LTE or whatever it is they use.
I like Samsung but I think they have too many phones too. HTC absolutely lost it – I like their products (I’ve bought from them) but even as an “enthusiast” I have no idea what they sell right now.
You aren’t really disagreeing with me. I think that many Android OEM’s make too many phones. I was just disagreeing with Mr Condliffe – who seams to believe that Apple’s one size fits all and we won’t release an LTE phone despite massive demand policy is right for everyone.
Yeah I realised that after
Ok, rephrase.
“I agree with you Daz, but I would take it back a step”
Less is definitely more. Buying a phone from a manufacturer that has more than a handful of other handsets in their line up will mean their support will be divided. Chances are that their popular phone will get most of their support while the less popular ones may get little or no support at all. Hopefully, manufacturers releasing fewer devices translates to increased support for each handset.
8 does seem a little excessive..
but as has been said above… 3 Android, 3 WP7 + LTE varients of both isn’t quite as horrific when ya break it down
