A school in Sheffield has become the front line in the war to defend the Queen’s English after banning teenagers from using slang or text speak on school premises, instead, urging them to speak proper like.
Sheffield’s Springs Academy has decided to steer students away from their phone-inspired speech, toward more verbose and pronounced English in an attempt to bolster their future career aspirations. Of course, to ban slang, you need to know what it is — and I’m pretty sure that teachers at the school are not exactly up to date on the latest lingo, let alone know what a Tweet or Poke is. Woteva. If you just educated them properly in the first place you wouldn’t need to ban it. I’m not saying intelligent people never use slang, but they tend to use it a lot less from what I’ve seen.
Everyone uses slang from a urban street kid to a public school boy. If anything it should be encouraged, the intelligence isn’t in using slang but knowing when and where to use different forms of speaking. Some of it is great, I like how the kids now say ‘ping’ me.
As long as the kids can use proper English when appropriate, I personally don’t have an issue with them using slang. For example, when i send of a quick text to my friends, I will abbreviate words, miss out punctuation and throw in the odd “LOL”. However, when I have to write an official email or write an essay, I’ll use proper English.
