For all of Sony’s troubles, their commitment to R&D is something that can never be questioned. Their latest achievement is a wireless radio component that operates on the 60 gigahertz frequency and can transfer 6.3 gigabits per second. According to The Verge, that’s good enough to exchange 50 gigs of data in under a minute.
What makes the technology especially promising is that it currently only uses a max of 74 milliwatts at any given moment, which is more or less on par with the power consumption of current GSM radios. I’m sure we won’t see said technology make its way into phones until the turn of the century, but I guess it doesn’t hurt to have something to covet, right? [Sony via The Verge]

So, Adrian, do you really think it will take another 88 years to reach giga bits per second transfers? I would rather suggest that by 2100 our descendants will be enjoying Peta bits per second transfers if not indeed exa bits per second. I am also quite certain that nobody (and I include Gizmodo staff writers here)would have the faintest idea how to use technology in 2100. Just imagine handing a 2012 lap top to a person in 1924. Do you think they would be on Face Book grinning from ear to ear ten minutes later? I think not Adrian, so please if you are going to blog on a technical site give us something worth reading.
pretty harsh review bro, i thought it was a good article, perhaps, in the next decade might have been more appropriate, or perhaps he was just being sarcastic because these technologies take forever to get into out hands?
Yes it was rather harsh. I also reckon that Adrian was being sarcastic and many technologies will never end up in our hands because either they will always be too expensive, impractical or have unforeseen drawbacks.
I am sure apple have a patent on that you will be receiving a call from there legal team shortly
“For all of Sony’s troubles”
Nice fanboy baiting there..
Has site traffic dropped that low you have to report to that?
Well, you’re still coming here, so they must be doing something right…
Sonys had a rough time in recent years.
So have most companies. Sony seem to have special treatment however where every little thing gets extra coverage,.
Well the hacking was a really big thing. Apple have been criticised for foxconn conditions (not that there isnt a lot of bias too), RIM for the network failure. It’s not just sony. There’s been articles much more worse for baiting.
