Forget about the 1-kilometre-high Kingdom Tower. There will be a building higher than that. This is it, the Azerbaijan Tower. It will be fifty metres higher, have 189 floors and looks like a beautifully shiny glass, steel and concrete monolith of crap.
The Azerbaijan Tower will be built on the Khazar Islands, an artificial archipelago that is being built off the coast of the Caspian Sea off Garadag, southwest of Bakou, the capital of the country.
The Khazar Islands will be a £60-billion city composed by 41 artificial islands. They will cover a 2,000-hectare surface. According to the plan, one million people will live in this new so called “city”.
The developer — some Haji Ibrahim Nehramli, president of the Avesta Group of Companies — is already negotiating with the companies behind the Burj Khalifa. Apparently, construction of the tower will start in 2015. It will be finished around 2019, with a total price tag of over £1 billion.
So yes, this is going to be real. Hell exists and it’s surfacing in the Caspian Sea. [News.az via Architizer]

1050 Kilometers???! That’s insanely high – well into space!
Why is it that each new entrant for the “world’s tallest building” is only a little taller then the last one? If they built one a few hundred feet taller you might hold on to the record for a few years longer.
How long will it be before we have to listen to 6 months of chatter for about 30 seconds of footage of Tom Cruise jumping off the thing?
Is this guy retarded? 1,050 KM?!?!
It’s metres not kilometres. As to Jesus being retarded I refuse to answer that on the grounds I may upset retarded people.
Just wait till one of those artificial islands starts sinking.
With all the “fake” land that’s being created for construction it’s inevitable that subsidence is gonna happen.
Have you seen the foundation tracts a building like this would have, if anything the underpinning would help to hold an artificial island up and in place. It would need deep concrete and metal tubes going 100′s of meters into the bedrock. Believe it of not, architects are intelligent professionally trained people who’s main concern is for the safety of people using a building.
The only 1050km pile of crap I see is the work desk of one Jesus Diaz.
Fair enough, it isn’t the prettiest building in the world. But I think it’s unfair to call it a ‘skyturd’. If I’m honest, I rather like the archipelago, it looks Star Wars-esque, in a way. But it shows that some people have WAY too much money. Now, I wonder what Apple will be doing with piles of cash…
It only looks like a shit when viewing it from the ground
But the main cluster and the islands look pretty good overall.
If the main building looked slightly thinner (by making it even taller?) and less round it would actually look pretty decent.
Does experimental architecture on an artificial island seem wise? :/
Jesus Diaz calling these building turds is surely some kind of metaphor about pots and kettles.
