Toshiba’s AT200 Android tablet, which excited people under its American name of the Excite X10 when it was shown off at CES and even made an appearance back at the IFA show last September, is now available in the UK.
Carphone Warehouse has acquired an exclusive to sell it, currently offering two models of the AT200 online, one with 16GB of internal storage space for £399, plus a 32GB option for £449. It’s available online now, plus it’ll arrive in the chain’s physical shops from February 15th.
For that money you get one of the more impressive Android tablets out there today, beaten only by the quad-core Transformer Prime. The display runs at 1280×600 resolution giving you a wide 16:10 aspect ratio, Android 3.2 is the OS, while it’s powered by a dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 processor with 1GB of RAM to keep everything multi-tasking nicely.
The AT200 also comes with dual cameras, both a 5megapixel main sensor and a 2megapixel front-facing chat cam, all stuffed into a case that’s on 7.7mm thick. [CPW]

I want to care about this, but for some reason I just don’t. It could be the fact that it is shipping with Honeycomb not ICS, or it could be the fact that it is just a thin, bland looking generic tablet. There is basically nothing in this that would make me want to buy it over the other tablets on the market or make me want to upgrade an existing device.
The Sony tablets were interesting but maybe slightly too much emphasis on physical design over usability, the Asus Transformer and the Asus slider were interesting with their additional functionality, and as much as I love a good spec/slimness chase, this is just a thin generic android tablet – I can’t see anything in this that would convince me to invest £400-£500 in one of these when a newer, probably ‘better’ ICS one will come out in the next couple of months.
Agreed, the price is plain stupid for this, I’d be excited if it was £250. Compare the spec and price of that to the Asus Transformer Prime:
Toshiba AT200:
Dual Texas Instruments at 1.2Ghz
1280 X 600
5MP with flash + 2MP (f-stop not advertised, so probably not good)
1GB
32GB
7.7mm thick
558g
Honeycomb
£450
Asus Transformer Prime:
1280 X 800
Quad core Terga 3 at 1.4Ghz ( extra low energy background 5th core)
8MP f2.4 with flash + 1.2MP
1GB
32GB
8.3mm thick
586g
12 hour battery
FREE keyboard dock with extra 8 hours battery, so 20hrs.
Honeycomb, but ICS getting rolled out already.
£480-499
Three plus points the AT200 gets from that spec compared are all very minor things, front camera is 2MP rather than 1.2MP – who cares? Not much in it for the odd Skype call, offset by the far better rear camera in the Prime. The AT200 is but 0.6mm thinner and 28g lighter, again not a concern unless you got OCD. And the AT200 is £30-50 cheaper but without the extra keyboard (battery) – and that kind of thing would cost you an extra £100 if it was on offer, which it isn’t – so in real terms the prime is a far greater deal considering that, before we talk about the the overall better specs in all the real areas that count.
