VLC, the greatest video omnivore of them all, has finally reached its two-point-oh, after eleven years. What’s new? Plenty. But don’t worry, the old standby can most importantly still play virtually anything you throw at it.
Mac users will see the biggest immediate benefit: VLC isn’t ugly anymore! The program’s Windows 95-chic UI is gone, replaced with an Apple-y, single-window interface that’ll match everything else on your desktop. It’s smooth, simple, and comprehendible, for once. Drag a video onto the window, and it’ll start playing. Kaboom.
But there’s plenty new under the hood, too: multi-core CPU and GPU acceleration, new HD formats, higher-quality audio processing, improved video filters, and “experimental” Blu-ray disc support.
It’s still free. Go and download it. Especially if you still live in 2004. [VLC]

Mmmm. What a lovely morning breakfast treat.
It’s a shame you can’t use the old Windows 95-chic interface, I don’t want it to organise my files, just play the video I ask it to.
Also VLC remote on android no longer connects.
I’ll be going back to the old version
Looks and feels much nicer. I’ve always had an issue with having the playlist separate from the media player.
Just tried the transcode as it has only ever worked for MPEG1 in the past for me. It seems to work, at least for H.264…
However, if certain Giz writers are correct about Gatekeeper, VLC will have to take their ball and go home, like they did on iOS.
Still no support for Cineform video files. It’s all I wanted really. I guess i’ll have to stick with quicktime for a bit longer.
I tried it, but I don’t think I like it any more than the old version. The file manager gets confused by files that aren’t media it can play, such as album artwork, and crashed for this reason the first time I ran it. Maybe that was because I ran it from the DMG.
I don’t need it as a second iTunes, but I would perhaps recommend it to people who wanted to replace iTunes.
When are they gonna get rid of that stupid traffic cone icon? Sheesh!
Doesn’t really make much diff on my 2GB 6970, Looks exactly the same…
this update sucks, the fullscreen defaults to the main screen on a MPB. downgraded already
