Many of us point to custom UI skins as one of the main reasons Android updates take so long to reach certain phones. But according a Motorola exec, that’s not really the case. It’s the hardware itself.
PC Mag’s Sascha Segan spoke with Moto Senior Vice President Christy Wyatt, who launched a full scale explanation.
“When Google does a release of the software … they do a version of the software for whatever phone they just shipped,” she said. “The rest of the ecosystem doesn’t see it until you see it. Hardware is by far the long pole in the tent, with multiple chipsets and multiple radio bands for multiple countries. It’s a big machine to churn.”
Motorola understands that consumers want their Android upgrades sooner, but the process is complicated, she said. First there’s hardware support, then the layering in of custom software from manufacturers like Motorola, and finally, phones must be re-certified by carriers, taking more time.
Long story short, handset manufacturers struggle have to code the drivers for all the different components themselves, and because there are very few hardware limitations on Android once it’s gone public, there is a ridiculous amount of variation in devices, even if made by the same company.
Another interesting little aside from the piece is that from the sounds of it, it’s possible that Motorola’s future webtops (the ones which use phones like the Atrix to power them), will run straight-up Android instead of some other version of Linux. That could be interesting. [PC Mag]

Because…
Android is a bag of SH!T, manufacturers try to cover it up with customisation such as HTC Touch Flo or Samsung Touch Wiz because they don’t really like it, the only reason the choose it is because of apps and even they are poor and they can’t have apple, and before realing upgrades manufacturers need to first ensure customised shells will continue to work.
Poor effort all around, just buy apple!
Would you please go and get yourself a life. Or at least send that valentine card to Apple as you obviously have a crush. It’s just a shame that Apple don’t know you exist, and probably wouldn’t care if they did.
Is there an ignore option to you Apple promotion crap?
Taf, I like Apple.
I’m indifferent about Android.
This stuff though, is just getting boring; your comment is neither funny or helpful; it’s just pointless and boring. Please don’t attempt to start arguments where there isn’t one to be had.
It wasn’t an opinion piece and it didn’t once mention Apple. So don’t bring Apple into it.
I know ppl are passionate about technology, but c’mon, CHILLOUT!
That’s a laugh coming from you; I don’t need to CHILLOUT, I need people like you to stop spouting shit in the comments in an attempt to start a fight.
And please… don’t deny that’s what you were doing; stirring.
C’mon now… Just look at the Apple post below on Giz, it had nothing to do with Android, but that’s how these things go. As for a fight, yeah I’m into my boxing
but I would have job hitting anyone over Giz.
http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/02/could-apples-next-tablet-be-just-an-ipad-2s-instead-of-an-ipad-3/
Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Android fanboys are just as bad; but that doesn’t mean that you need to come onto an Android piece and start spouting rubbish about how great Apple is and how shit Android is. And if you notice, I’ve called that idiot out too.
Fine, offer up an opinion, but don’t start with inflammatory comments like: “Android is a bag of SH!T” and “Poor effort all around, just buy apple!”; that’s not opinion. It’s stirring.
TaF = The apple Fanboy?
Well perhaps it’s true ( I was the first in que for the iPhone 4 at local store)
, But I would buy Android if it was worthy, I know I will buy Win Mobile before long, you can never have too much technology..
Yup, he’s our resident iTroll. Easy to spot as the bridge he lives under is glass fronted, with aluminium supports and lots of white furniture. Looks quite snazzy for a bridge, but ultimately lacks any soul or individuality. Taf can be seen sat in there wearing his jeans, black polo neck and iBlinkers which limit his views on most things that aren’t authorised by Apple. To lure him out from under his bridge, Gizmodo just needs to post something about Apple or Android, even if the Android post has nothing to do with Apple.
For all of his faults, I don’t mind his constant Apple posting. Sometimes it’s amusing to see how he can get a mention of Apple into an article. Best of all there is only one of him so the comments section doesn’t descend into a massive fandroid vs iFan fight.
So UK Giz posters, please feed the troll but not too much. At least we know what we’re getting with Taf.
I got to Admit I found that to be very funny… ROFL.
Despite what anyone may think, I’m only acing a laugh, I do agree that I’m well out numbered so perhaps have to shout louder!
Maybe that was abit harsh Taf , but considering the fact that many gizmodo readers use Android and don’t waste time in wishing the downfall of Apple perhaps not. But nobody can argue the fact the time to upgrade often never comes on Android (galaxy tab won’t be getting ICS for example) and a device can be out of date in a matter of months..
Do you have two accounts and you forget to log out of one to reply to the other?
Or do you really mean to reply to your own posts?
Holy crap, it sure looks like he forgot to log out.
That would be really pathetic.
Wow. The fact that you have a star, let alone posting rights, is practically criminal.
Congratulations though, you’ve made this entire post about you which I reckon was your aim. More to the point, you’ll get away with it to. I’d love to pretend you’re the mug here but I know it’s me.
So i have plenty to say, about technology current and emerging, as well as science! And you are… Oh yeah Starless….
You never have anything to say about technology, all you ever do is post snide remarks.
That reminds me of this quote:
“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.”
I have plenty of things to say about a plethora of topics. That doesn’t mean I spout my unique brand of rubbish as soon as the urge takes me. There’s another quote about opinions and similarities to the human anatomy that’s relevant here too, but I don’t want to lower the tone.
You seem to be slow in responding to a question asked before I even posted. Perhaps you should focus your energies on that instead, I’ve heard you have “plenty to say”.
At the time of commenting I was, indeed, starless. While that doesn’t detract from my point at all, clearly someone likes me because I’ve since been starred. Good retort though, it showed about as much thought than everything you’ve felt the need to verbally defecate thusfar.
I’m not one to waste Saturday evenings feeding trolls so I’ll leave it there. I wish you a pleasant Sunday and hope that, with a good night’s rest, you’ll rethink your approach to this website. Ciao!
Congratulations on your accomplishment, I’m sure it will be the highlight of the day for you, second only to reading the messages on this article!
You still haven’t answered so I can only assume you are actually sad enough to have two accounts, one of which you use to argue with yourself…
Who is the Taf alter ego?
Is one Apple and the other Android? There are medical terms for this kind of personality disorder. I’m no Pyschiatrist so I couldn’t comment. But Maybe he lives in a big scary house behind a motel.
I think he’s actually a closet Android fan and Taf is the alter ego
I have one account but many gadgets to connect to the net with! 14 ways to connect to the net at last count whilst at home!
And yeah I do reply to my own messages… That’s how I roll.
I think you meant “That’s how I troll”
Samsung using Android > iPhone
Galaxy S2 is by far the better phone.
scaramoosh – you’re even less funny than Taf. Quite a feat.
In a hope of talking technology:
I wonder how hard it is to code for differing hardware, considering the mod community is very productive. I am sure it takes time but imagine that testing and verifying is the real time taken up. I’d like to hear comments from the mod community regarding this.
And Taf, get a grip – I don’t mind you being unhappy with Android or its app store, but don’t say, ‘Android is shit’, or that, ‘android apps are poor’, without backing it up with some substance, because that isn’t even trolling, its like a forum with a drunk old man sitting in the corner shouting out abuse for no reason – and as you well know this isn’t a majority opinion. So let us look at one of the latest Android phones, Samsung Nexus Prime, what is it that you don’t like about it? Why is it so shit? Which android apps do you find being poor?
Nexus prime and some other phones are kOol I guess, what is meant by SH!t is how poor it is that it’s many Android handsets don’t even get an update.
As a individual who test software as a profession I agree the time it takes to verify is very time consuming. In the same sense the Android apps to me seem to be of lower grade,, not very polished off in general and often crash. Also if your phone doesn’t get an upgrade to say ICS then does that not lock you out from some applications?
Try getting iPlayer, 4OD, six nations etc on an iPhone 3…
People in glass houses.
I agree on the handset front with updates, but with so many handsets from a long timeline then you can’t expect an update all the time, but the same goes for Apple, Siri on an old iPhone – but if you brought an Android phone for £100 in the last 12 months then I don’t think you an expect the latest and greatest updates for the next 2 years, but haveing said that I know someone who purchased a Sony Xepira Mini for £130 and he will be getting ICS on that in April, which is great progress in a standard handset.
As for the Apps I also agree to an extent, but it may be patchy in places but the Android market is very open and mostly free, I have never had much of a need to buy on app, but if I’m looking for a new app, say a good weather app with a great widget interface I’ll download 4-5 of the best scoring weather apps play about with them and keep the best one, which is usually great – in this case the UK Met Office app for android is amazing.
I have had a few droids over the years and I have never had a problem running a new app on a current phone, and rarely had an issue running an new app on a old phone.
But to state that android is shit because the odd low end phone doesn’t get an update is wrong, because even if you brought a low end phone with the latest OS over every year over 3 years it would still be £200 cheaper than buying a iPhone.
And in general the Andoid market does have some poor apps, I think everyone can see that, but I can’t use that as an excuse to demean the tons of high quality professional apss that are also on that market, because it is open and mostly free you are going to get some poor apps, that is the nature of a free and open market.
