If a leaked screenshot is to be believed, Google Drive will come with 5GB of free cloud storage for all, not a measly 1GB as previously reported. Showing a Windows Google Drive client ready for download, it looks like we might actually see the fabled GDrive sooner rather than later this time, though I’m still not going to hold my breath.
Although we’re getting pretty close to the end of March, and we all know what that brings, the screenshot looks pretty legit. I’ve said this many times before over the last couple of years, but I reckon we might actually see vapourware turn into a reality with Google Drive in April. Just maybe. I’m still bloody confused by this. I’ve got an Insyc account which, due to the incredibly low price of extra Google space, encouraged me to purchase 250 Gigs extra. So will this space become my GDrive?
I strongly suspect that Google drive will unify all of Google’s cloud storage products (Doc/Picassa/Music) in one place, with a desktop client (like Dropbox). We shall have to see under what terms this happens since I already have more that 5 gigs on each of these services.
Should be interesting. It is incredibly cheap.
I’m surprised that are not going for 25gb to compete with Microsoft’s Sky Drive
I also wonder if they could be preparing something similar to iTunes Match for Android devices.
They already do, it’s Google Music, it’s just not technically available in the UK. It doesn’t match songs, but you can just upload your entire music library and stream it to your Android device or in-browser.
And it works excellently.
Thats handy to know. I soon expect to be giving up my iPhone 4 for the Galaxy S3 when it finally arrives, so still being able to play my music at work is another mark in the plus column.
I can confirm Google Music is full of awesome. You will need to activate it on your Google account by using a US proxy (hidemyass.com works well). Once it is activated however you can switch the proxy off and it works anywhere. But you can’t buy music through it unless you are in the states.
Having your entire mp3 collection in the cloud, and available through a web browser or on your phone is just so convenient.
I have a Bluetooth FM transmitter in my car that connects as soon as I switch the engine on, once connected I can stream my entire collection and control it from the dashboard. Why did nobody invent this sooner!
Dropbox is blocked at my work so I hope 5GB is true.
What’s the betting that the desktop version will be some Windows only crap?
HIGHLY unlikely. I would bet my mother it’ll be a web app downloadable from the Chrome Store. Google push this technology way too much to have a desktop client. Heck, what’d you do on ChromeOS if that were the case?
