The new iPad guts are nice, at last getting 1GB of much needed RAM to accelerate all that web browsing. But the most impressive thing is the new battery, which takes most of the space. It’s a gigantic 70 per cent larger!
The iPad 2 had a 25-watt-hour Li-ion battery. The iPad 3 has a 42.5 watt-hour battery! That’s 70 per cent more than the previous capacity. 70 per cent more magical battery unicorns, people.
The battery life hasn’t changed, however: it’s still ten hours of use, nine with average use of the mobile data network. So why the increase? Obviously, that big screen and the more powerful processor are hitting the power big time.

Battery life is the bane of my smartphone obsessed lifestyle.
We need better batteries.
It’ll take longer to charge

Maybe its just me being picky but does anyone else think that picture sucks? You’d think a tech blog could take 10 seconds to photoshop out the black background?
Or take the even easier route and just make the background black.

Fix’d. Your welcome!
Really isn’t you. Things like this bug me. It was the first thing I noticed…then the unicorns.
This is also a bit picky but at least made it more-or-less 70% bigger if that’s what the article’s about. This one looks more like 200% bigger.
The unicorns are nice though…
Given it’s a cylinder, it’s probably more like 400% bigger
Why not stick this battery in a iPad2 spec device.
There wasn’t anything wrong with the iPad 2 thats been sorted with this new device so why not just have an iPad2 run for 20 hours?
Ye, I completely agree as well.
Because taking a USP of the iPad 3 and putting it in a iPad 2 takes away the USP.
It’s been show that you can retrofit Siri to a iPhone 4 but Apple won’t because its the USP.
The bigger battery is definitely not the USP, as it doesn’t provide a longer battery life, so the majority of users wouldn’t know there was a difference. The USP has to be the screen or the processor. I agree with the original comment though, a 20h battery life would be great, and the iPad2 is still a great bit of tech
The indicative battery sizes in the image are so massively out.
This is either because:
1) Diaz thinks he is funny, and has deliberately done a massively stupid size comparison is part of this article’s pathetic attempt at irony. This would be fine if the article wasn’t so massively unfunny.
2) Diaz is massively stupid, and has simply done a 70% increase in each visible dimension (despite the image depicting a 3-dimensional object). So that would be a double-fail then.
Anyway, we knew everything in this “article” about a week ago, and that’s how long it has taken Diaz to divide one statistic by the other and come up with his incredible humour.
I will tell you why this douche wrote this.
To screw my bet up!!!
What was your bet?
you will find it towards the end on this article. Just a fun bet with Happyal.

Magical battery unicorns.
Yesssss.
An imperceptibly offset 7 on the calendar bugs Diaz so hard, he can’t stand it. However he’s perfectly happy with cutting out the battery images in a sloppy manner, leaving a black border?
I have to ask, is he actually slow? Not even asking as a joke here; was he hired through some equality scheme on Gizmodo? Because I feel bad for making fun of him.
To be fair, that’s not Diaz’s fault. His posts get ported over from the US site, and on the US site it looks fine.
Not sure what happened there — think something cocked up in the feed. Have just swapped the pic for a new one, though!
I’m not sure why the pic ended up like that; I just swapped them out though, so hopefully it’s now fixed. My apologies!
I love Apple don’t get me wrong but seriously Gizmodo..stop posting hundreds of fucking articles on tiny stats on iPad 3. There must be more things around to write articles on than iPad 3 24/7.
We’ll stop posting Apple stories, when people stop reading them. Did you know this is our most-read post of the day, for example?
If we got the same amount of traffic on Android stuff, or even Symbian stuff, then we’d reciprocate. So would any tech site. But unfortunately (and I say this as an Android user), that is not the case.
Yay?
A screen that needs 4x the CPU and CPU power needs a bigger heavier battery CAPACITY to put it in the same battery LIFE as the iPad2..
How is this a good thing?
