Confirming what pretty much everyone already knew, streaming is officially more popular than renting discs, at least according to LoveFilm. Having gone big with its LoveFilm Instant in the battle with Netflix, streams are now the most popular way people consume stuff from the Amazon-owned company eclipsing DVDs, Blu-rays and games combined.
It’s not really a surprise; given the choice I would always pick the one I could grab instantly. The trouble with DVDs by post is that you have to wait a couple of days for them to arrive -- by that time you might not want to actually see them anymore. I must have had the same Blu-ray sitting in the draw from LoveFilm for nearly three months now; I can’t even remember what it is.
Now LoveFilm is pushing itself as a “predominantly streaming business”, which is great, but it’s still got a long way to go with its catalogue and streaming quality before it can afford to jettison its physical disc business. Let’s hope LoveFilm doubles down on streaming and ups its on-demand game. I want at least HD video with Dolby Digital surround sound; none of this stereo SD rubbish please.
