Mobile Phone Coverage Coming to Undersea Not-Spot

The train journey to and from France will become a little noisier from July, thanks to the Channel Tunnel and mobile network operators managing to squeeze network reception down its tubes.

The system, which is believed to be launching in July, uses new technology from Alcatel-Lucent to generate both 2G and 3G network coverage throughout the tunnel's entire 23.5 mile sub-sea section. The plan is to have it up and running in time for the Olympics. [Guardian]
