More than thirty years after its release, Das Boot remains one of the most gripping war movies ever made. We're on the edge of our seat just thinking about it. But is it really the best candidate to launch a new line of watches? That's exactly what's happened at Baselworld, with the company describing them as "Divers' watches for real men!"
But this might be something more than an empty-headed marketing ploy. The company responsible is Swiss watch manufacturer Montres Charmex SA. They're the current world record holder for water-resistant diving watches, with the CX Swiss Military Watch line working at depths of 6,000 metres. It makes sense for them to link up with a brand (if that's the right word for it) where a submarine travels to crushing depths underwater.
The link-up has been in the works for a while, with some hilariously bitchy asides on the official website: "The reason for this [delay] lay primarily with the pretentious demands made by the legal owner". We suspect Google translate is responsible for this German-to-English blooper.
The full range will be released in May 2012, with no prices announced as yet. Rumours that Wolfgang Petersen is going to revisit his film and insert CGI shots of the watches are completely unfounded. [Das Boot]
