The Pope Gets Hit Squarely Between the Eyes By a Dot-XXX Porno Cybersquatter

It seems Richard Branson’s not the only famous target of porno cybersquatters, the Pope’s fallen under their crosshairs too. To make matters worse for his papalness, not only is the cybersquatter trying to mire his name in the smut; the domains are also punting a competitor to his "one-true religion" in the form of Islam.

The classic PopeBenedict.xxx leads the charge, but it’s not just a single attack the head of the Catholic church is dealing with here; the apparently Turkish squatter is properly carpet bombing his smear-target with a whole insidious collection of domains including: josephaloisiusratzinger.xxx, josephaloisiusratzinger.com, benedictus.xxx, benedictxvi.xxx, ratzinger.xxx, xvibenedictus.xxx, xvibenedictus.com, benedictusxvi.xxx, pontificio.xxx, holyfather.xxx, and josephratzinger.xxx.

The dot-XXX domain controller, ICM Registry, had helpfully blanked out a series of potentially sensitive religion-orientated domains that it rightly thought would get it into hot water. Things like muslim.xxx, christian.xxx, anglican.xxx, jewish.xxx and hindu.xxx, as well as vatican.xxx were all protected, but no one thought to block-off, or at least pre-buy, any Benedictine domains – someone’s sure to get excommunicated or sent on secondment to the backend-arse of nowhere for that. The Pope’s bulletproof bubble car might protect him in the real world, but online it seems he’s fair game. [The Register]
