The UK Really Loves the Internet, Hard

By Sam Gibbs on at

Apparently the UK is the nation most in love with the internet, beating out the rest of the G20 in its contribution to our humble economy. In fact, Brits need their internet fix so much that over half would rather give up alcohol, chocolate or coffee than the web; not to mention the quarter that would rather give up sex than their broadband connection -- now that's what I call addicted.

According to the latest research, the internet contributed some 8.3 per cent to our nation’s economy, bigger than every other major economy in the world, including our US cousins. Apparently its Brits buying stuff online that really does it, with 13.5 per cent of all purchases made in Britain made online; a bunch of lazy, couch-bound slobs we must be.

I don’t know about you but I’d definitely rather give up chocolate and coffee than the internet. I’m not so sure about alcohol though; and sex, well, that’s an even harder sell. [BBC]
