It's usually Germany or Finland that provides the comedy entry at Eurovision. This year it's going to be us, thanks to the BBC's decision to send Engelbert Humperdinck out to Azerbaijan to represent the nation.
The 75-year-old "King of Romance," whose last UK hit was 40 years ago, will be performing an as yet unannounced song written by a chap who co-wrote James Blunt audio torture instrument You're Beautiful. He'll be the oldest ever Eurovision entrant.
The choice of Humperdinck is seen as being a somewhat tactical decision, as the ageing star is still touring around and rather popular in the critical Eastern Europe sector. If that lot can be convinced to vote for us, we're in. And it'll go some way toward easing the 15 years of hurt since the UK's last win. [BBC]
