Sony Screws Older BRAVIA Owners Out of Sony's Entertainment Network Netflix Launch

By Gary Cutlack on at

There's some good and some quite remarkably poor news out from Sony today, which has just announced the arrival of Netflix content through its Sony Entertainment Network connected devices. The bad news is, only owners of 2012 BRAVIA models can join in on the TV side.

Sony says that "The Netflix app will be available on all 2012 BRAVIA, Blu-ray and Blu-ray Home Theatre models" which will be very sad news for anyone who bought one of its expensive TVs in 2011. Cutting out a vast number of loyal buyers who've purchased its internet-enabled TV over the last couple of years seems rather cruel, even if there are mitigating technical reasons.

Of course, owners of older BRAVIA models will still be able to stream the content in through PS3 or PC, but that's significantly more fuss than just having a simple TV app. Less environmentally sound, too. Bad Sony. [Sony]
