Scientists are thinking about starting a new geological era: the Anthropocene, the period of geological, environmental and biological transformation of the planet by humans. Cities, towns, shipping routes, global roads and air networks are all changing Earth. This video shows the extent of this change.
The new era’s name (anthropo- means human and -cene means new) refers to the effect of humans on Earth ecosystems, including the transformation of terrain and life all around us. This visualisation of Earth-made by anthropologist Felix Pharand-Deschenes-shows this effect. It’s amazing and breathtaking, but also pretty scary. Enjoy it. Or not.

Every Bus Route In London Mapped Looks Strangely Beautiful
And I would wager who-ever made this video hails from Manchester.
I would have thought that London, Southampton or Birmingham would make better start positions in the UK.
The lights, the roads, the shipping lanes and the plane routes all exist on that scale because of the industrial revolution that began in the North of England and South of Scotland around 200 years ago. As the world’s first industrial city Manchester is clearly the best place in the world, not just the UK, to start a video designed to show the spread of the Anthropocene age.
it really doesn’t matter. i think it’s because it’s the north-westernmost major city in europe pretty much, so the spread looks better panning east
I’m failing to see why any of those cities would have been any better.
And I’m from Liverpool!
