If you bring your broken black iPhone 4 to the Apple Store, you might get a fresh iPhone 4S as your replacement phone. What?! Yep, because of supply constraints, many Apple Stores don’t have any black iPhone 4 units (16GB/32GB) in stock so they have been instructed by Apple to give customers an iPhone 4S instead.
That means if you have a phone that’s broken right now, you can get all the upgrades that the iPhone 4S offers—Siri, A5, better camera—for free! What a timely break. This actually happened a few weeks ago with the white iPhone 4 16GB (GSM) where Apple was giving users with a broken iPhone 4, a new (er, probably refurbished) iPhone 4S. The constraints with the white iPhone 4 has been resolved now and you can expect the problems with the black iPhone to fix itself in a few weeks too.

I dunno, Apple want to keep their customers happy. They replaced my 2008 MacBook with a 2011 MacBook Pro because it had a loose headphone port they couldn’t fix. The MacBook was no longer sold that so obviously that was the only option for a replacement lol
I went to apple a few weeks ago about a faulty home button for my iPhone 4. Got quoted £120 to replace it. Quickly turned the other way and walked out. The earpiece is almost dead now too. The contract is up in a couple of months so I’ve just been putting up with it.
The warranty will only be a year. After that, it’s up to you to cough up the cash if anything goes wrong. It’s pretty much standard on all technology these days. Sucks really…
2 year warranty is EU regulation and one which Apple is required to adhere to now so they’ll be happy enough to exchange the phones. But you’ll never get a brand new phone from them (always a refurbished one).
I wouldn’t go breaking your iPhone 4′s yet though as any phone replaced by Apple is a refurbished model. Hence why they give me out without any fight from the customer (I’ve had 3 iPhone 4 replacements and my partner has had 1 — all from the Apple store). So just in-case you thought you’d go along with a bust phone, oops, one that was working ten minutes ago; don’t! As you’re getting a phone someone else already broke!
Almost happened with my 3G. The home button broke and the one replacement screen they had wouldn’t work, unfortunately the manager wasn’t able to upgrade me – apparently Apple keep switching that option on and off.
On the plus side I was there for so long and pissed them off that despite being two years out of warranty they just sent me home and they replaced my screen for free the next day. Don’t know how I managed that.
