Adscend Media is the jerk ad agency responsible for many of the “OMG LOL THIS VIDEO IS SO GOOD JUSTIN BEIBER” links on Facebook that, when clicked, spam the same crap link to your friends. It has just been fined £62,000 by a Washington court for spamming and scamming Facebook users.
The thing is, that fine looks tiny compared to the £750,000 that Adscent Media brings in every month; 80 percent of which comes from the scammy links that, really, should be punishable by orbital bombardment. Facebook itself is trying to legislate stuff like this out of our lives, and this decision is a step in that direction, but there’s still a lot of lawyering left to do. [Venture Beat]

They also do the “Complete a survey to view the content” things.
Personally I think the companies that insist I install their Facebook app just so I can see what my friend has posted should all be taken out and shot in front of their families.
I’m looking at you in particular, Yahoo and Viddy. There is no way in hell I’m going to install your app and give you all my personal details just so I can see what my mate has read/watched.
Why can’t people just post LINKS to things anymore?! WHY does it ALWAYS have to be through a Facebook sign-in?!
The Guardian, I can make peace with. If I click one of their links and say no to the app, at least it still takes me through to the actual article rather than dumping me back on my News Feed, like the giant, corporate ‘fuck you’ I get from Yahoo and the rest.
I don’t want to live on this planet any more.
I admire your passion and agree wholeheartedly.
£750k per month you say?…
