LG’s launched the world’s largest and slimmest 55-inch OLED TV into Europe and I have to say, I seriously want one. It’s just 4mm thick and weighs a featherlight 10kg — perfect for my wall. There’s a catch though, it’s a stonking 8,000 euros (£6,400-odd). Ouch.
We first saw the beastly 55EM9600 at CES and were totally blown away by it. Gorgeously rich colours and deep blacks that only OLED displays can produce, and at 55-inches too. Needless to say you’ll get an absolutely fantastic set for your money, if you have over six-grand burning a hole in your pocket.
As you might expect for the price, LG’s shoehorned in its 3D and Smart TV tech too, and you’ll be able to go drool over one in flagship stores in July. While it’s just a tad out of almost everyone’s price range, it’s a big step up for OLED in the UK — the last one we could actually by here was Sony’s £3000 11-incher. More of the same please TV manufacturers, but can we try and make OLED slightly more affordable next time?

I think you mean Sony’s 11-inch XEL-1 (unless I missed something).
To be honest, 8000 EUR isn’t extortionate for a top-of-the-line, 55-inch OLED TV. Especially when it wasn’t so long ago that an 11-inch was around half that price. It will just keep OLED as the preserve of the early adopter for a while longer.
Oh yes, you’re right, just 11-inches. I seem to remember it being bigger than that. I was smaller then
Do you often overplay the size of things Sam?
Normally the converse
I paid 3 grand for my first 42″ plasma, which wasn’t even HD! Having said that, I was young free and single then. I’d only need to sell one of my kids to afford this now……
Where is it that you are getting such good prices on selling your children? Is there a cashforkids Website or something?
Ah, I may be a fAndroid, but my kids are iKids……..
Good times, I remember dropping £2.5k on a 22″ Panasonic LCD bargain! Still use it today mind you and I sometimes look at the picture through a DVD and think its impressive.
4mm thick?! That’s insane, I bet in a few years I’ll be able to blu-tac a TV to my wall!
and you’d only need a small dustpan for all the pieces when the blu-tac gives way and it crashes to the floor.
It’s 4mm thick because all of the main hardware is either in the stand or a control box, so mounting it on a wall might be a challenge unless LG have taken this into account and supply a long connection.
I’d also guess that the sound is really reliant on a home cinema setup
I’ve never got this obsession with ‘oh it’s only x mm thick’ paying over the odds for 4mm is missing the objective of a TV you look at the front not the edge 99.9% time, so picture quality is key and if OLED delivers then cool
Who are the people in the picture? I’m guessing one is a sportsman (due to all the logos on him), the other bloke looks like someone’s drunk uncle who has wandered up on stage by mistake, but I am not familiar with the young lady and I think I should be.
That’s F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel isn’t it?
Yes but who’s the lady, that’s my main focus of interest here.
That is Gemma Sanderson. My Australian girlfriend reliably informs me she once won ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’.
And if you were wondering, the old dude is French Film Director, Jean-Jacques Annaud (Seven Years in Tibet, Enemy at the Gates, Two Brothers etc.)
Although he isn’t quite as yummy.
Yep, Sebbers. He gets to go to all the cool parties.
That is ridiculous. It only felt like yesterday when flat panels were first being introduced and it was a big deal. I must give it up to LG though, that is one great looking TV. LG has been tremendously improving with their technology
