Here’s a reminder for concept designers and tech industry analysts: just because you can technically make something and it may look nice, it doesn’t mean you should do it. Example: this stupid Facebook/Instagram camera, with a flat touch screen and a built-in printer.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure that plenty of hipsters would buy it and wear it around their necks as they tote their soy lattes around Shoreditch. New Age fun with a vintage feel and all that.*
But, the reason Instagram got to be so popular, and the reason Facebook bought its cool hype for a billion of hot dollars, was because everyone had the app on their iPhones, making their snaps easily shareable. We just don’t need another useless piece of junk to carry around with us, is all. [ADR Studio via Petapixel]

What if Pinterest Were in Real Life?
Breaking: Facebook's Buying Instagram for a Billion Dollars
I miss the Polaroid cameras of old.
Wow, strong wording for a Gizmodo article title no? I have no personal objection but I’d think some might, but maybe not.
I agree stupid idea though!
As soon as I read that, I was thinking … It must be Jesus Diaz!
Yup, I get the impression he is quite an angry person
You need to watch the video below the pics to get the joke, innit.
I saw the video a while back (possibly from here) and think it’s pretty funny and hits the mark well and like I said, no issue personally, was just worried about others’ reactions but I guess most readers have good humour to
Most Giz readers have really good senses of humour (else they’d be reading Engadget!)
A good sense of humour, but mostly just good taste
Oh… I read both… What does that say about me?
Definitely bipolar. I suggest medication in the form of booze. (Err, if you’re over 18. And drink.)
Oh dear. I’m 16, I’ve tried drinking, didn’t like it though.
In which case I reply: DO NOT DRINK THE BOOZE.
Try, err, some icecream instead?
*slinks off all embarrassed-like*
I like ice cream. I’ll try ice cream. Thank you.
I do agree with you though, Engadget doesn’t have much fun.
It’s simply not funny, or ironic. And the video doesn’t excuse the tone of the article.
And there was me thinking the Gizmodo community held sway…instead we have an Editor defending dross.
A couple of dissatisfied commenters doesn’t exactly worry me — you should see what goes on over in the comments’ fields of our US website!
But seriously, I don’t see anything wrong with the tone of the article, nor the headline. Gizmodo has always been a risque site with witty, irreverent and opinionated tone. Like I say to anyone who disagrees with our style or content, there are a million websites to read, and I’m not forcing you to read this one.
Would be sad to see a starred commenter go, though! We’ve got some great stuff in the pipe for starred users.
I’m not going anywhere, and always appreciate your viewpoint. In fact, most of the contributors here have a great tone to their writing that I enjoy.
However, there’s a subtlety and flair to being irreverent and opinionated that Mr. Diaz simply lacks. He’s deliberately inflammatory but doesn’t possess the skill in his writing style to carry off being ironical or sarcastic. I have more wit in my little finger than he’s ever displayed in his articles.
As I have suggested elsewhere, the simplest solution is for myself and others (for we are many) is to pay more attention to who has contributed a piece before clicking links.
It’s very much down to personal taste: I, and a lot of other readers, really enjoy Jesus’s posts and style. While some of it errs towards the sensational side (but we’re being more careful with those), he really hits the nail on the head with his opinions and tone, I think.
Saying that, he’s not my favourite Giz writer…but then, a lot of people don’t like Sam Biddle’s posts, either.
BTW, Dean, I emailed you. Not sure if you want to reply, but I’d appreciate you at least reading it.
Read and responded. Don’t stay working too late!
I’m guessing you’ve just got a sailor tatt and some purple leggings? No need to be mad……
I actually have what could be described as a “Maritime-themed” tattoo. No purple leggings yet…
chuckle. Watched the video now. Some crazy people in the world, or should I call them dic…..
I think the last sentence of the second paragraph could do with re-writing. Or putting out of it’s misery.
It needs to be killed. It bothers my grammar-Nazi eyes.
But the reason Jesus Diaz got so good writer that sentences don’t need good grammar because everyone reads his articles and make lots of views.
Sorry, that was completely my fault — I edited the post before publishing, but obviously missed a few mistakes. One of those days where I’ve been up to my eyeballs in juggling budgets, and wasn’t paying close enough attention.
In the future, if anyone ever spots any typos, please do feel free to email me (my address is in the “contact us” bit at the bottom of this site.)
… I’m still blaming Diaz, seems like the right thing to do
Well…he doesn’t exactly have a clean track record when it comes to spelling and grammar.
Crucify him!
Yes, crucify anyone who isn’t from an English-speaking language!
Seriously though, the occasional Jesus error does creep through the net: we can’t all be perfect. But we’re really trying to encourage a positive commenting community here; constantly bashing one editorial member is far from desirable. I’ve stated time and time again that we’re being more selective with his posts when transferring them from the US, and more careful when editing them — but as you saw here, not even I (a self-confessed grammar Nazi) is completely immune to the odd mistake. We’re a really small team, and hugely stretched as is. The last thing I need is to spend my time consoling commenters over the odd grammatical error.
Moral of my rant: please guys, just email me if you see an error. No need to be children about it.
You didn’t get the “Jesus” gag?
We obviously have very different tastes: you think Jesus’s posts aren’t funny, and I thought that pun was dreadful!
Believe me,the pun made me groan even as I typed it!
Humour is certainly subjective. For example, I simply don’t get what’s so funny about The Mighty Boosh or League of Gentlemen, and I think Flight of the Conchords, Napoleon Dynamite and Lee Evans are all massively overrated (and yet the latter could fill Wembley for a month in this country!).
On the other hand, I know people who think my grumpy old man pessimistic anti-establishment humour is a little close to the bone and offensive (Bill Hicks, Doug Stanhope, Charlie Brooker etc.)
Jesus is a weird mix of the two. Certainly “quirky” (to put it kindly) but also paradoxically conformist (when he likes something, he’s all over it) AND yet also anti-establishment (he hates everyone and everything that deviates from that to which he personally subscribes).
It’s like a journalistic embodiment of a confused and disenfranchised youth trying to establish some semblance of an identity that will give him the popularity and acceptance he craves, but also carries elements of an unstable boy who flips-out like some hormonal pubescent teen. I want to hug him and tell him everything is going to be okay, but also to put him over my knee and introduce him to my belt.
I don’t know whether I want to listen to what he has to say about technology or news. I know it’s my prerogative to ignore him, but I can’t help but follow him like some kind of soap opera character that might someday chill out and normalise.
I`m beginning to like Mr Jesus articles, not so great on the dick head title, but thats just me. Id would of used icrap users or something.
You need to watch the video below to make sense of that headline…
Ahhh, yeah that was pretty funny, I guess its all in context then.
I should of paid more attention.
Really? I’ve had enough of this chump. This wasn’t some great attempt at irony and humour, it’s just his usual sensationalist drivel and “sense of humour”.
I guess I’ll just have to start making note of the contributor before I click links.
Ends never justify the means Kat – and as you clearly edited the post – to include Shoreditch as the location reference no doubt, maybe you should of thought of cleaning it up. Oh and by the way, the post is clearly NSFW because of its foul language and should be marked as such.
NSFW? For saying the word “dickhead”? I think you’re on the wrong site, in that case.
Ignore him, Kat. As a fellow SS for ze Grammar Gestapo I can assure you that the opinion of anyone who believes “would of” or “should of” are correct structures in the lexicon are automatically rendered null and void.
Thanks, Alasdair — I was tempted to point that out in my reply, but thought that would just be nasty. (Likewise: Darrell’s comment up above, asking for a rewrite of the post, but misusing an apostrophe…)
It made my blood boil. Sadly, though, I must take my own life immediately. Such childlike mistakes as using “are” after failing to pluralise “opinion” cannot be tolerated, and I fear a hypothetical world, in which my hypothetical offspring are permitted to run amok perpetuating such linguistic fallacies, would not be worth risking.
Goodbye, world. Never use a preposition to end a sentence with.
You are my new favourite commenter, without a doubt.
(Not that a mother has favourites. Ahem.)
Omfg, I don’t think I’ve ever cried from laughter at a Gizmodo comment. As a fellow advocate of standard English, I salute you, Comrade.
In the real world Kat, profanity is considered not safe for work. You don’t swear at your boss do you- and therefore decent companies don’t expect their employees to have such profanity on their screens on or off the clock.
Don’t get me wrong, I like giz and have done for many years before you arrived here… But this story didn’t need the profanity in the headline and if my rather strict and dickhead boss had walked passed my screen as I was scrolling through then it would of caused me some bother. Now this isn’t me saying that my boss is right, but giz needs to take into account that there are dickhead bosses in the world and it simply isn’t cool to have profanity in the title of a well read blog that potentially gets us unlucky ones in trouble.
Maybe you should hold yourself to slightly higher editorial standards. We are British after all.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Not_safe_for_work
Good grief, is this argument STILL going on?
I can’t believe I’m having to write this out as it seems so pitifully obvious, but here goes:
DISCLAIMER
Gizmodo UK, Kat Hannaford, Jesus Diaz, and other contributors, are NOT responsible for your job security at your work establishment.
The publication of a blase-offensive post is not, in any way, a breach of your human rights or civil liberties, in spite of what some may say about Sr Diaz.
Equally, internet censorship has not yet reached the point where articles containing the word ‘Dickhead’ are required by law to carry a NSFW tag.
It therefore stands to reason that if your ‘dickhead boss’ takes issue with you browsing Gizmodo UK during the hours in which he is paying you to crunch numbers in an Excel spreadsheet, then maybe (just maybe) you should re-read the terms of your Contract of Employment, spin around on that funky office chair of yours, and save reading about the latest and greatest in the world of technology until, say, you get home?
Unless, of course, he’s one of those REALLY dickheadish bosses who follows you home, sits on your family PC and then screams at you for looking at LOLcats when you should be cooking a nice lasagna for the wife and three kids. THEN I might start to take issue with his managerial prowess.
Just as I was about to write a huffy reply to our tedious friend, I read your response, and through the tears of laughter, decided there was no way I could phrase it better myself.
I will say however that gj64mad would likely self-combust if s/he ever set foot in a media office. We’re all swearers, including senior management, here!
I really want to find the creator of this project, convince him to put this on kickstarter. Then fund it, and fund it loads. Then take said camera, and go to the Gizmodo headquarters where I’d take a picture of Jesus.
Just for you Diaz.
Don’t forget to apply lots of wonderful hazy filters and share them all over his Facebook wall
…And throw the hefty camera at his head afterwards.
I’ve made some alterations to this article:
Here’s a reminder for pretentious bloggers and self anointed ‘experts’: just because you think you can pull off being a self-righteous, pretentious twonk with no regard for any opinion other than your own, it doesn’t mean you should. Example: your stupid facial hair and aviators and sullen “cool” look, with accompanying “art” and a black & white filter.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure that plenty of “hipsters” envy your ability to assert your opinions while not really having any regard for grammar and structure or any moderating degree of self-effacing charm, or perhaps admire your brazen assertions that anybody who might differ in opinion is automatically a “dickhead”. The reason why you appear to be in a position to “blog” for Gizmodo is not popularity or ability, but an admittedly admirable ability to ‘troll’ before your ‘articles’ are even submitted.
You are a useless piece of junk who should keep his opinions to himself if you’re going to be such a knob about it.
And yes, I watched the video. I just happen to still think your “articles” and headlines are mostly worthless traffic whores.
WOWZA! Did your goldfish just die or something? if you need to talk about we’re all here for you. You don’t need to suffer in silence.
Jesus Diaz would be singing it’s praises if it had an Apple logo on it.
Wow, i really think we need to cool it down on the hating now though.
Its something we obviously all wanted to read about, the video was funny and does indeed explain the title. We agree with the author’s view that it’s a crap idea and finally it has been cleared up that the typos weren’t his fault.
I think with many of us now it’s just seeing the name.
Surely there is a browser plug in that can change every occurrence of a word or phrase with something else? That way we can just replace it with something comical like “moist wenis”
Ha, “moist wenis” would be great.
I have actually thought of setting up a new editor’s name, and crediting all of Jesus’s posts to this new (not real) editor. Would love to see if people react to the content or just the editor’s name.
(Of course, we’d like see incredibly fastidious people crying out “but I saw that on Giz US and it was Jesus wot wrote it OMG I FEEL CHEATED AND WANT MY MONEY BACK GIZ UK.”)
You could try put it down to them as coincidence?… maybe?
You’ve got to try that. I’d love to see if the posts got as much hate.
Actually. I don’t agree. I think its a fantabulous idea. Seriously, i’de fund this as i am pretty certain people would like it. Kickstarter the sh1t out of it I say.
While I agree its not the most practical of items. I, and most certainly 90% of my shoreditch, mocha latte soya frappa drinkers would.
I have no issue with the word Dick in the title, or the narcisistic undertone.
I just want to give someone my money to own one of these.
I like it.
Seriously, I come here because I like the style of the articles. Jesus could have put something simple like “theyre really not necessary, here’s 10 reasons why” and we’d have skimmed it and forgot it. Instead, he wrote a pretty short piece saying “this is an example of something we dont need, even though there’s a bunch of dickheads that think we might”.
Now, I’ve not seen the video before but thought it illustrated the point of who those dickheads might be perfectly and from that you make the title. Strong word, yes but its warranted.
As for the bitching on here, perhaps it’s just a bit close to the bone for some which let’s face it shouldn’t be a suprise.
Thanks for your coherent and well-argued response; appreciate it.
I must be a dickhead
I would totally buy it. Seriously. I think its pretty awesome looking.
This product needs to happen.
Welcome to the final stag, my friend: acceptance.
Just my view of the arguments here on the article.
Yes people can write what they want, and yes people can go elsewhere if they do not like what Gizmodo write about.
But just something I think Gizmodo need to think about more seriously than these comebacks, is what sort of image and reputation your giving out to people. I just would of thought that as a business you would have some interest in maybe limiting controversy/swearing/abuse in order to remain a respectable source of information.
Just because as a regular reader I love the site, but when a person uses any product/service it portrays an image of what that person is like, and if there’s articles like this going around it makes them ashamed to be an avid reader and less likely to use or recommend the site, it can not be food for Gizmodo or Future.
(Just before everyone has a go, I’ve tried to be honest, I don’t want people coming back at me to get lost, it’s just surprised me how little Gizmodo seemed to of been thinking about these sorts of effects) – No problem with the article personally, just skipped by it as not a fan
