Editing text on the iPad can be a total pain. Say you want to insert a word in the middle of sentence. You have to tap just so or you’ll stick it in the wrong spot. A guy named Daniel Hooper thinks there needs to be a better way, showing off his idea for a superior alternative in the video above.
His improved keyboard would let you select text by holding the shift key as you swipe. You’d be able to drag to move the cursor, or drag with two fingers to move it faster. The methods he demonstrates could make for a faster, more user-friendly keyboard.
But he doesn’t want to keep the idea for himself, and he’s not selling any kind of product. He suggests that you should send Apple a bug report to tell it you’re unhappy with the keyboard, encouraging it to work on a fix. Who knows if Apple’s listening but Hooper has been told that Apple looks at it as a problem, so maybe we’ll see something different in the next big update to iOS. That’s a great idea. It’s the only really annoying thing about using my iPad.
Superb idea. Kudos to Daniel Hooper!
Alternatively They could ass 4 little arrow keys to the keyboard allowing us to move the cursor the same way we have done fast and efficiently for the last 30ish years. Hell even my iPad keyboard dock has them so at least they recognised the need.
Use not ass, no idea where that came from….Edit please!
Now we know what you were doing while typing that message out!
What iOS 6 (for iPad) needs:
This concept – plus the command button for copying, cutting and pasting – which is the only niggle about the iPad keyboard that this concept misses out really.
Quick access to Bluetooth, WiFi, and other frequent settings from the Notification Centre – Quickpick, which was my favourite app, no longer works with iOS 5.1 (from the Notification Centre).
Widgets – either in the Notification Centre or on the home screen – for apps like weather, stocks, clock, calculator, etc.
Multi-tasking improvement – including the possibilty of having two apps on the screen at once.
With these improvements, my Dell laptop will be reduced to an iTunes backup machine, making my trusty iPad 2 my primary computer. I sincerely hope this concept makes it to iOS 6, it’s what the iPad desperately needs.
apple are not going to like being told what to do
This is an unfortunate problem for Android as well. Unless someone knows about a way around it?
